Do Colleges Even Care about PSAT/NMSQT?

I got a 217 on the PSAT--not enough to get me commended or a semifinalist.

I took my first SAT practice test yesterday and got a 2290 without any studying or prep. I must've really screwed up on the PSAT.

Are colleges even going to take into consideration whether or not I (or anyone else, for that matter) got commended or anything on the PSAT, especially if I get a 2350 or so on the SAT the same year?

It only counts for NMSQT. Certainly making commended, NMSF and NMF help, but that doesn't get you in. SATs/ACTs, grades, ECs and essays get you in.

It really not that big a deal, but...217 is DEFINITELY high enough for commended (unless the cutoff went up 10-15 points in one year, which I somehow doubt), and in many/most states, it is high enough for semifinalist. So good luck.

Yeah it only matters for NMSF and NMF standings.

217 is definitely high enough for commended student, and it will probably be good enough for semifinalist also unless you live in one of the very competitive states, such as New York or Massachusetts.

Yeah, I was gonna say, the commended cutoff is lower than that ...

colleges dont, but outside scholarships will.

But do colleges see your PSAT scores? I know they don't count, but as mine were so bad - it might give them ideas!

They only see them if you achieve a NM status, including Commended. Contrary to what I've seen a few times here- Commended status is GOOD! This (CC) is a group of very high-achieving students, but if you were to take 100 students from all over the US and stand in a room with them, and your scores made you one of the top three of the students, job well done. Harvard and Yale might not care about Commended, but there are lots of schools that do.

217 is way, way over Commended cut-off.

you'll be commended. definitely.
I don't know how much colleges care, but everything can help a little.
IvyRomantic: They don't normally see, but if you're commended or a semi-finalist you can send your scores to two schools.

They never see your PSAT score. They will know if you are commended or a finalist if you tell them. However, even then, they won't see what your score was.

Colleges don't see your PSAT scores - even if you are a "high scorer" and get to pick two schools to be notified, the schools are only told that you are a high scorer, not the precise score.
