do colleges favor the sat or the act?

ive heard the act is a midwest thing...and im from the midwest so i can see that its somewhat true...

however, im reaching out for some of the schools out east (barnard, smith, holyoke, wellesley, harvard, nyu...?? id really like to go somewhere in boston) and i know that the sat is an eastern thing...

do colleges prefer one test over the other? does a better score on the act make me look dumb?

I'm from the midwest too and it's frustrating because I just don't understand SAT's.

But what I've been told is that coastal people are just more accustomed to the SAT. They can better interpret that score than the ACT (which is exactly opposite from me since I don't know anyone who's taken the SAT). My advice is to take both tests and send both scores. If they only allow you to send one, send the SAT to coastal schools and the ACT to midwest schools.

Hope this helps.

Princeton is the only school I know of that seems to really discriminate against ACT scores over SAT scores. Go for what works better for you. Where I live, the only kids who take ACTs were the ones who didn't score high on SATs, but I know it's totally different out in the Midwest. Send what works for you- nowhere but Princeton will mind.

I'm from the east, and until a few years ago, I didn't know the ACT existed. Stupid, I know. However, I doubt that one is more favored. The only difference is that the SATs score you with bigger numbers.

they say they dont care but most ivies prefer the SAT. its a more difficult test and its more widely taken and u can compare urself to people outside of the midwest. they say they dont care but most of the adcoms say u should take the SAT

no it stands for the American College Test

Dutchie05 is pretty much a flaming/joke account.

It doesn't make you look dumb. As far as I know, while most schools prefer the SAT, women's colleges (I know this for Barnard, at least) do NOT look down on the ACT. Something about how it's a more broadly ranging test, so it isn't as baised against female test takers or something.

wow...even if Dutchie05 is a joke account, he/she needs to be kicked off the board. All the posts are so antagonistic.

I agree, hes a jerk, he just insulted everybody from the midwest, what an arrogant fellow.

hey primefactor, do u think we can start emailing cuz i have some questions about barnard that id like to be answered by a currently enrolled student. let me know. my email is meanjeanie@msn.com
