My transcript has three GPAs, one for 9-12, one for 10-12, and one for total (which I personally don't understand. What is the difference between 9-12 and total?)

Do they look at unweighted or weighted more?
my stats are like this:
9-12: unweighted-3.6, weighted-4.1
10-12: unweighted-3.75, weighted-4.3
Total: unweighted-3.7, weighted: 4.1

Which one(s) do they look at the most?
and how important is class rank? i'm in the top 5%, i believe.

Some HSs don’t weight, the ones that do use different methodologies. So, generally colleges will look at the UW gpa and also assess how difficult your coursework was in relation to what is offered at your HS.

Class rank is important too. Colleges look at all of these metrics.

State universities may have their own GPA calculation method to avoid differences in how high schools calculate GPA weightings.

Private schools may just look at the transcript to see what grades you have been getting and whether you chose the most rigorous courses available in your high school.

Class rank may or may not matter, depending on the school. (University of Texas uses it to the exclusion of GPA; University of California does not use it.)

They first look at the “rigor” of your course load: Did you take the most difficult courses your school offerred. next how did you do in your core courses. They really don’t care if you had “A”'s in Art & Chorus. My D had three “B”'s & all “A”'s in the rest of her classes in grades 9-12, taking all the AP classes offerred. She was accepted at Cornell. Hope this gives you a point of reference. If you are in the top 5% of your class, take the most rigorous classes, I doubt that your grades will keep you out of any college (including top Ivies). Your SAT / ACT, EC’s, Letters of Rec., & Essays will be the deciding factors at the top schools.

You have 3 gpa’s because some colleges look at 9-12, some look at 10-12 and your third may be either all classes or just solids, depending on what 9-12 includes. In addition to looking at your rigor, adcoms look to see you took the range of classes they expect- eg, 4 years of lab science. Many hs do not rank- and some have peculiar standards for rank. Adcoms either know the competitiveness of your hs or look to the profile info the GC sends, to get a sense of where you stand.
