If a college has an NMF scholarship, do they see the applicaton/essay the student puts together for the NMSC? D is considering using a portion of one section of her common app for the NMSF essay, but was wondering if a college that has a NMF scholarship will see that (and therefore if she should write on a different topic, since she will be putting something similar in her common app). Anyone know about this?

I don’t know, but I hope not! I think a lot of students reuse the common app essay. I am going on the assumption that the colleges are notified who is a finalist, but that is all they are told. The schools my D is looking at that offer NM scholarships offer them to every finalist. If they have bigger scholarships, they seem to have other criteria, extra essays, etc, so I don’t think they use the NM essay. I will just be happy to see the NMF application finished!

I was able to get an answer to this from our college counselor today. She said that the colleges do NOT see the essays (even if they are your first choice college). She did say that the judgement of which semi-finalists make it to finalist is done by college admissions officers who come together and work in groups to review the semi-finalist essays. So if by remote chance an admissions officer read your essay AND remembered it when they saw your application later, then they might notice. But she did not think this was any cause for concern (remote chance, probably would not cause an issue even if it happened). So she said to go ahead and re-use from common app components as appropriate.
