Do connections help?

For the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, how much would it help me to have a major connection? My uncle, who is close to our family, is a CEO of a major company that has a firm at Chapel Hill. He also used to be a board member there I think. Last year I told him I was going to apply there but didn't know if I would have the grades to qualify because I struggle in a coupe classes. But he said "don't worry, I can get you in." Now that I'm a Junior, I have a great qualifying GPA, almost their average SAT scores accepted, but I did get a C last year. I am also in-state, plan on applying early action, and a great list of extracurriculars, and go to a private school. I feel like I wouldn't be able to get in on my own, do you think if he helps and writes a recommendation letter, it would help?? (He does NOT do this often, only for his son who didn't near qualify for Chapel Hill.)

If he thinks he can help, I can’t think of a reason not to ask him to help. Sit down with him and talk to him about what he would say about you and how he can help. Talk about what you like about UNC and why you want to go there.

Realize, however, that when you makes this pact you have a responsibility to do the best you can there so that your uncle doesn’t look like a fool. There aren’t any free rides, OP.
