I am a hispanic male teen applying to Philips Exeter Academy.
I have very good grades, and am currently in pre ap Geometry. I am a competitive mathlete, where as I have placed 11th, 12th, and 20th at statewide competitions, and when i took the SATs through duke tip, I placed in the top 96th percentile. I currently know 3 languages, and am an avid cello player, whereas i am apart of on of the best orchestra programs in the Texas, and am apart of 3 symphonies. I have a 1st place medals in public speaking/debate and would not be needing financial aide.
I think you have a solid chance, though it really ultimately depends on your essays. I had a close friend in middle school who scored in the top 1% for numerous national math competitions, 99% SSATs, and was in one of the best youth orchestras in the New England region as a cellist, but she was rejected to all her schools because of her essays.
Make sure you apply to safety schools and don’t be generic in your essays. Good luck with PEA!
I will be honest. The fact that you are Hispanic is a huge plus. These schools are desperate formula lifted candidates that also offer diversity. You are qualified, you are in a severely underrepresented minority in these schools and you don’t need FA. Personally I would bet you get in everywhere you apply.
An excellent chance and an excellent fit! Texas applicants become the “model” dorm room occupants at NE BS, ha ha! I am saying this as three of the five schools we visited used Texas male boarders’ rooms as their “model” rooms. Bibles and TX state flags included!
You have excellent academic credentials and two other hooks: Southwest and Latino. Good luck to yo!
I’m currently an upper (junior) at Exeter. I’d say you’ve definitely put yourself in the running for being accepted. You’re obviously very smart. But you don’t have a ton of EC’s, which can be concerning. With more EC’s I’d say you’d be accepted without a doubt. It’ll be tough, but you’ve definitely got a good chance at acceptance. Good luck!
