Major: Biotechnology
GPA: 3.1
igetc: competed
Pre-req: missing one ( organic chemistry)
My essays are really good and I have done volunteering:
I applied to a selective major, do I still have a chance of even getting in? It’s my third year at community college and UC Davis is my first choice.
If I don’t get in. Can I appeal?
I’m a biotech major at UC Davis (non-transfer) and even though the major is listed as “selective,” there are less than 200 students in the major total; that being said, a fair amount of the students are transfer students. I’ve seen students enter in a less-selective but still relevant major without organic chemistry (ex. plant sciences) but since you’ve finished your other pre-reqs (hopefully meaning the entire physics series, calculus, biology) I wouldn’t worry too much.
I finished math and chemistry. I will be finishing the last biology and physics sequence this semester (by next month). If I get into UC Davis, i am planning on finishing organic chemistry during the summer. I just couldn’t fit it during this semester. Are you sure I have a chance? It’s a very selective major, and I only have a 3.14 gpa.
I think you have a good shot. I am going to be honest with you and say that biotechnology is not as good of a degree as it looks. In general we take a “lightened” version of the courseload that regular biology majors would take (for example, brief organic chem vs. regular o-chem, 2 quarters of physics instead of 3 but of course this is irrelevant to you as you already took it at a community college; employers might know that the reqs are less stringent for the biotech degree here than the biology one), so if you wanted to take a medical route, you’d be at a disadvantage. If you want to go the RD route, you’re slightly better off due to the heavy lab component of classes here, but as you know those don’t pay so well. If you want to go into biotech law, you’ll be fine here. And if you want to pursue a MS/PhD that’s fine too.
Thank you, I’ve been really stressed out Because Davis is where I really want to transfer to. Everyone else that I know of applied to a biology major and i haven’t met anyone so far who applied to the Biotechnology major. I hope since many people applied to other majors, that their should be some space left for the biotechnology major. I just really want to get in. I don’t have a back up plan either. Are you sure I should get in? And that I even have a chance? I feel really discouraged because everyone around me have a gpa over a 3.5
