Do I have a chance of getting in if I attend CC

So my high school grades aren't good enough to get into this school but it really is my top choice. I'm wondering if I attend community college for 2 years, and I do really well, would I have a chance of getting in this college knowing that my H.S transcript is also sent in for admissions? I want to attend the film program. My H.S gpa is 3.0 and my SATs are 1100.

Bump…

What are your other options?

With a 3.0/1100, unless you’re applying for one of the audition/portfolio type majors, you realistically have no chance as a freshman. If you’re applying for one of the audition type majors you’re going to need a spectacular performance in which case you might have a chance. At this point probably your only option is to enroll at another college or CC, get all 4.0s for two years and then apply for transfer.

That may sound harsh but you need to concentrate on the things you can effect going forward.

Hi glamex!

USC accepts a lot of transfer students - most will be those who have completed two strong years of community college or who’s high school record would have been likely to garner admission as a freshman, but there are always exceptions. Your best bet is to really do well in community college and give it a try as a sophomore while keeping a long-term plan to transfer as a Junior in your pocket. As always in admissions, have academic and financial safeties on your list as well.

I typed this up on the transfer thread last year about the “grey areas” in transfer admission - remember there are always exceptions. Good luck!

Edit: In case you haven’t yet encountered “SGR,” it stands for Spring Grade Request, which means that when decisions are mailed you are neither accepted nor rejected, but they would like your final Spring grades submitted before they make a decision.

Hello! I transferred into film (Critical Studies) from a CC after being rejected out of high school. I took two semesters of work at my CC (30 credits, the amount you need for them to focus primarily on your college record and so that you don’t have to submit test scores) and transferred this past fall. I had a low GPA in high school, somewhere in the lower half of the 3.0-3.4 range, ACT of I think 32 and SAT around 2100. When I sent in my application after my first semester of college I had something like a 3.8 with 14 credit hours. They did not ask me for an SGR, but in my acceptance letter they specifically said that I would only be accepted provided I could maintain a 3.5 at my CC, so I sent them my spring semester grades anyway (3.6 GPA with 16 credit hours). I had a lot of ECs from HS on my app the first time around, but in CC I only did a couple (including a full time job at a movie theater and some other movie-related work). The Cinema school in particular also did something where they asked current students to recommend friends of theirs that they knew were applying for admission, and three of my friends submitted my name. I have no idea whether or not that influenced their decision at all, but they haven’t done that program again this year as far as I know. The Cinema school also places heavy emphasis on your writing ability. I’m not going to lie or act modest or anything; I consider myself a good writer and I got into numerous other top film schools out of high school but USC was always my top choice so I chose to save money and attend CC for a year. It paid off in the long run, was completely worth it, and I have absolutely no regrets about it. If you get rejected this year, apply next year. If you get rejected next year, apply again. You may as well keep trying if you really want to go there.
