this upcoming year i am applying to: Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Avon Old Farms, Tabor and Cushing. I am going to be a sophomore and plan to repeat my sophomore year. As a freshman i was on the varsity soccer and hockey team. I also played baseball. I had three B's this year and the rest were A's. My GPA ranged from a 3.97 to a 4.1. I am also doubling up on math and taking all honors courses, i also plan on also joining the student council. Do i have a chance at getting into these schools? Replies very much appreciated

You need to work on your grades for Hotchkiss and Deerfield. At the most you should have only 1 B. Send clips of you playing hockey or soccer to the schools. (You sound like you are pretty good at sports)

Good Luck!

I would have to respectfully disagree with prepschoolplease only because I had more than one B and gained entrance to Hotchkiss, however I can’t speak for Deerfield because I didn’t apply there. I think grades really vary from student to student. I do think you have a chance because you have a good range of schools, some with less selective admissions rates than others. You seem like a well rounded student, good luck to you!

I was generalizing when I made my previous statement. However, it would be best not to have any B’s to maximize your chances, which I am sure he would like to do.

Thanks for the replies, I would say that Deerfield is my number 1 choice, I am a legacy at Deerfield and Tabor…if that helps.

Being a legacy definitely helps…also extracurriculars

I am looking to join the student council. I also help out in a soup kitchen.

That’s great! But remember that you need something to set you apart from everyone else applying, especially those with stellar grades and solid extracurriculars. They want strong character that will add to the community. It is important to have one or two sports you are good at, extracurriculars, and something like community service. Volunteering at a hospital is a great idea because you learn a lot and you help out your community at the same time.

Bump, advice appreciated

Please give me your opinion on other schools that are good for me.

Check out Lawrenceville. It’s an awesome school with a pretty heavy emphasis on sports, which you seem to be really into!

Are they generous with financial aid?

Bump. More advice please.

Average GPA of entering Choaties is around a 3.75, and considering it’s a school of similar caliber to Hotchkiss and Deerfield, your grades may be unlikely to break your application since you claimed a GPA of 3.9.

Bumppppppppppppppppp

Then wouldn’t it make sense for your annual-fund contributing alumni parents or grandparents to be advising you on your chances, rather than complete strangers on the internet?

Buumppppppppppp

Yes they’re. What I’m trying to inquire is that if being a legacy makes a difference.

Legacy helps, but it’s no guarantee. Needing FA will make it more difficult to be admitted.
