Do I have a chance?

Hi, my name is Jacky. I go to Midwood highschool and am a senior. Due to my poor SAT scores and my GPA, I was not offered admission to Binghamton. However, I will not quit and am interested in being a transfer student for the Spring 2011 semester.

My GPA in highschool is 3.5
SAT scores R540 M630 WR610 = 1170 combined
I dont know about the scores of my three AP tests yet, i took Government, Microecon, and Biology
Extra curricular, I volunteered at a summer school in a church for 2008, I volunteered at the Museum of Natural History in 2009 and this year I'm going to do an internship at The museum again.
I'm going to attend CUNY Hunter this year for the fall term and plan to transfer out, I really want to get into Binghamton but if I dont I will go to Buffalo/Syracuse.

I understand my GPA is low compared to the applicants but is there anything i can do to make myself stand out and be able to get into binghamton as a transfer student?

Thanks!

I was in your spot a few months ago. I didnt get in as a senior in hs, but applied my first year of college. I sent in recommendations, the mid term grade report, and the transfer supplement without being asked beginning the last week of Jan. In addition, in my transfer supplement, i added things that were in the binghamton area when i visited to get a better feel for the essay.
any questions feel free to ask

pinky7129, did you get in? When did you apply, after Fall or after Spring ? Did your professors write good recommendations? How was your midyear term report? What things did you put into the supplement? Finally, can you tell me how the environment in Binghamton is?

Thanks alot

jacky, dont sweat about it too much. First of all, most importantly, you need to go to Hunter with a positive attitude and get a kick-ass GPA. Also get to know some professors really well and visit them at their office hours. Try to be involved in some extra-curriculars that you would ENJOY rather than joining for the heck of it. The internship will work in your favor huge.

With that said, I would recommend retaking the SAT if you truly feel you can improve. Go to the SAT/ACT prep for help and great advice. If you do everything correctly as I stated above, theres no reason why you would not get in lol :)

I agree with all of the advice above. Successful transfers all had good GPAs from their original colleges. The only issue that might occur is that because you would only submit one semester’s worth of grades, the admissions officiers might have to go back to your HS GPA… Perhaps you should consider a Spring 2012 transfer?

caemin, I know that I would only submit one semester’s worth of grades, but would that really be a problem? My GPA was 3.5 (90.37) but would they see my senior transcript instead? Thanks to the AP classes and such, I achieved an average of 99.57 and 96.59 both semesters together. About the Spring 2012 transfer, why not Fall 2011? =O

The reason I say Spring 2012 is to get that extra semester of grades. If you feel you won’t need it, then by all means apply for Fall 2011.

Will they overlook the SATs and HS GPA if I do go for the extra semester of grades?

I don’t think it’s completely eliminated but less weight is given if you have more college credits.

Once you have 24 or more college credits, a high school transcript isn’t required for transfer admissions.

Alright my fall semester’s classes totals up to 14.5 credits. Hopefully I can ace these classes and have a lot of extracurriculars before transferring. Do you guys think Binghamton or Buffalo is better for Biology?

I am going to bump this thread
