Im currently in the application process for my junior year. I have spoken at march for our lives, I am apart of civics unplugged which is a digitally empowered community that is devoted to helping genzers help the future of the American democracy, I am apart of racial awareness club, and hope club which is a mental health awareness club, I am a high honor student at the top private school in Maine, my grades range from A- to A+, I am a ambassador fellow at Michelle Obams “When we all Vote” program, I have a passion for making this world a better place for future generations and I love helping kids which is why I am apart of 4-h and cheetah which are summer programs where you help little kids and the community, and I’m on jv basketball and varsity lax. The reason why I want to go to Exeter is because as a Black Muslim female I never felt truly accepted and going to a school where kids have different backgrounds will help me flourish as a student and a person. I like in Maine which is one of the whitest states.
Meant to say I live in Maine
It depends on money situation. Are you full pay or need $$$$$ in order to matriculate? Being an Afro American Female your chances are better than others.
My family makes less than 75,000 per year so full financial aid. I’m currently on full aid at my private school right now as well.
@sabrinalove I think you are a very strong applicant. As an AA low income with pretty good ECs you have a strong chance. Sorry to be quite blunt, but Exeter isn’t the most diverse school. Even though it is probably more diverse than your current school, it has a lot to work on. Only 45% of class is POC, and around 50% of the class pays full tuition (low socioeconomic diversity). That being said, Exeter is truly an awesome school, and on a full ride, it will be hard to beat. Also, look into Groton, St. Paul’s, Andover, Peddie, Mercersburg Academy, Hill and others alongside Exeter. Imho, the Ten Schools are pretty comparable.
Also, just wondering, are you from Waynflete?
Yes, I am from Waynflete! Also, I am aware that Exeter isn’t very diverse but to me, it seems like it just because I’ve always gone to predominantly white schools.
Also, does it help if I am the oldest of 9?
I’m a current Exeter student; I’d say you sound like a strong candidate. Having also grown up in Northern New England, I would echo @Burgmuller2 about Exeter’s diversity . . . almost certainly more diverse than where you are now, but definitely a mixed record and current status on DEI matters. However, I would add to that that though I am not a student of color, I am of a religious minority and before Exeter went to a public school (~1000 kids) where I was always “the only one” in my classes and grade, and coming to PEA was a MAJOR improvement. I’ve had a handful of unfortunate interactions at Exeter, but I’ve also found a real community there and it’s so much better than the school I came from in that respect as well as many others.
I would also agree with other posters that if you’re really committed to going to boarding school, you should cast a wider net, because even for a strong candidate, there’s a certain amount of luck involved in getting in, since the AO wants to “build a class” and you have no way of knowing who else might be applying at the same time; additionally, although I don’t actually know this, I would suspect that it may be a little bit harder to get in as a new upper for those who aren’t sports recruits, but that’s just my speculation, so other posters could confirm or deny that.
