Do I have a shot at attending a good University(maybe an Ivy) ?

Given your background and ethnicity, if you get a 30+ ACT score then I think you have a chance at al of the schools in post #187.

Sure your GPA isn’t the best but you’ve got a great story, and makes for an interesting read. AdCom people really like the underdogs.

Post again once you have the real ACT scores and we’ll talk again. I still think you should try for Penn LPS.

Oh and I’m not sure if I agree with clarinet dad. Most of the Wall Street firms care about where you did undergrad.

Even if you were valedictorian from Big State U with over 20,000 kids they would rather take a kid with a 3.2 GPA from the lowest Ivy.

So getting into a top school is important for Wall Street jobs. Once you get in, there are plenty of majors where you can breeze by with a 3.2.

@sgopal2 I don’t think a B.A in finance will do me any good compared to a B.S in finance.

I honestly hate when people say “it doesn’t matter where you go to school…” that maybe true, but only up to a degree when it comes to Wall Street.

@sgopal2 - so by big state U you mean Virginia, Michigan and Berkeley?

@ClarinetDad16 Virginia, Michigan and Berkeley are all great schools, but if you coming form an Ivy school, it’ll be easier to break in.

It does not matter if you get a BA or a BS in finance.

You are OOS with a terrible GPA – I don’t think your URM status is going to overcome that at UM, UVA, or Berkeley ( and you can’t afford Berkeley anyway), or the top Ivies. Plus… you may be a transfer student.

Is your goal an Ivy League degree or a Wall Street Career?

@ClarinetDad16 A Wall Street Career. I’m just looking at schools that are feeders to Hedge funds/Asset managers.

@siredan - are you looking at the schools that have placed the most into those fields?

Hint most are not Ivy League schools…

@ClarinetDad16 Mind listing them? When I search for schools that have the highest placement, I see a lot of school being Ivy and “public Ivy” schools such as Texas A&M University, University of Virginia, etc.

Also, I’m not applying to Ivy schools, but schools that have a decent reputation on Wall Street.

Click the evestment research study link within the CNBC article. You can truly see everything about Wall Street in relation to colleges:

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/09/23/penn-beats-harvard-on-wall-street.html

As you are not getting into Harvard or Penn, there are many better undergrad options over the other Ivies.

@ClarinetDad16 Thank you for the list. I think I’ll have a chance at some of these Universities.

I don’t understand Brown. I know it’s an Ivy, but I didn’t think it was a feeder to Wall street.

You now see there are many more manageable paths to your dream career than a disparate set of schools in an athletic conference.

Keep your eye on the prize and good luck.

Interesting that University of Iowa is at #15 for public universities. I would never have guessed that.

@AlbionGirl Thank you for the list.

@sgopal2 You said I had an interesting story. You also said that the AdCom people really like the underdogs. Do you mind explaining? I was thinking of writing about how I over came my reading disability when I was younger. But base on your response, I might right about that.

@intparent My school grades differently. Every school grade is split into 2 terms (i.e. 9th grade term 1 and term 2). My grade was strong strong in the 9th grade, but drop in 10th–this was because I stopped thinking about going to college. But them my consular started pushing me to do better; therefore, my grades have an upwards trend. my GPA as of now is 80/100.

21 ACT For ivy league and not even 3.5 gpa?? Don’t even bother thinking about it! Honest to god, if you could get in to at least Purdue with those grades, I’ll get you a free burrito!

@SirEdan She/he/they have a point. Ivies aren’t going to look far past that, regardless of any of the other awesome things you did.

@SirEdan I’m sorry to lay the bad news to you but it’s the truth and honestly don’t believe when people says things like your EC activities are very important for Ivies. Your ECs will only be important if your grades are competitive enough with other applicants and in this case at least 4.0 gpa and 30 act score. If not, they wont even reach to your ECs when reviewing your application before they binned it.

@awesomepolyglot @MasterOfDecept OP understood about 10 pages ago that Ivy League schools weren’t an option. That doesn’t need repeating ad nauseam.

@SirEdan It might be better to start a new thread - this one is cluttered to the point that misunderstandings like the one you just observed are all but inevitable.
