do i have enuff extracurricular

Hi! I'm currently a sophomore, and I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind crtiquing my ECs. I know that it's important to focus on what your passions are, but the thing is that I don't think I've quite found it yet. In the future I might possibly be interested in entering the medical field, or maybe double major in the arts and sciences.

So far:

-Debate Classic- I'm aiming to win state next year if possible;lots of awards.
- Science Olympiad ( we qualified for nationals this year)- lots of awards ( are they considered as a "filler" award?)
-Newspaper- I'll probably move up to have a position as an editor, maybe.
-Track & Field- I think I made varsity this year. ( last year the team as a whole won state, is that significant at all?)
- NHS?- (I'm not sure if I've gotten in yet, I'll find out next week)
- I'm thinking about starting a Model U.N. or some sort of medical club junior year.
-I currently volunteer at a women's shelter and at a major hospital. (hoping to gain 200+ hrs)
- Student Council ( I might run as an officer this year)
As for leadership positions, I'm hoping that I can have some sort of leadership position in them by my senior year.

Summer activities:

I might go to gtown for their summer pre-college program.
Next summer (summer before sr. year)- I plan to do some research/ get an internship somewhere.

ditch the summer program for a job

p.s. try to find a 2-year research commitment you can work on instead of some 3-week research program o_o

depth+quality > quantity

^ thanks.

bump. any more suggestions?

There have been many threads about this. It’s not how many ECs you have … rather how much you enjoy doing them … you need to be passionate and committed to or highly involved in them.

^Yeah, don’t worry about quantity. Put in effort into the activities you like most and get a lot achieved/leadership positions.

Lol, I’m not worried about quantity. Just about how they’re looking, not “weak.”

^NOTE: Leadership positions can help demonstrate commitment to an activity, but it’s not an absolute must to have in order to get into the top schools. Not everyone can be expected to be a leader, so if you’re not naturally one, don’t force it.

As for how they look, they’re not weak … they’re just pretty standard to me. (not that it’s a bad thing)

^ Interesting note, it’s just not that easy to gain leadership at my school. Since I want to major in something science related I don’t have many science related ECs except for SciO.

^Leadership sometimes can be hard to get … e.g. for my school, it’s based on popularity voting, so usually all the popular people snag the leadership positions, so it’s pretty unfair. In an ideal world, I would want leadership positions to be rewarded to the people who actually deserve it, but of course, the world we live in is far from being “ideal.”

Also, it’s okay if you don’t have all ECs related to Science, because you do seem like a well-rounded person and colleges like well-rounded people … it could also indicate that you’re just using your time in HS to explore as much as you can … and that’s also pretty much accepted.

Oh, I was just assuming you were worried about quantity because the title of your post was asking if you had enough extracurriculars. Definitely look into doing research since you’re interested in science. If you want a 2-year commitment like someone else said, maybe you can start this summer.
