I feel like this is a stupid question but I am a high school senior about to graduate and want to do Biomedical engineering. I got accepted into Rutgers and the Pre-Engineering program for Colorado Boulder but I am still waiting for a reply from UMD College Park. I just want to know that I can get a GOOD job after completing the four years in uni.
Thanks in advance.
You can find a “good” job with a BS in Biomedical. However, most that pursue that degree, plan on following it up with grad school, law, medical, or go into research. I know at UF it’s 66%, so that’s should give you a rough idea. The average salary (with only a BS) is the lowest of all engineering majors at UF, likely because of the limited range of jobs that are available (low level research jobs, part time jobs, etc) or perhaps lower than average GPA’s (which is why they didn’t go to grad school/law/medical/etc.). I would expect many still plan on continuing their education. .
To be honest, if you only plan on earning a BS, you may want to look at another engineering major, like Mechanical. I wouldn’t recommend biomedical unless you plan on following it up with another degree.
By the way, you should research each university, but at those three, I would expect it’s not difficult to switch out of Biomedical, before your junior year, if you find it’s not right for you.
ME would also give you more flexibility if you decide you don’t want to do “medical.” MEs can do many BME jobs, but the reverse isn’t as true.
For data on ME vs BME go to https://www.wpi.edu/student-experience/career-development/outcomes and download the PDF for a selected year. The latest year is 2017. On page 14 of that year you will find that classes BME data. Go to page 45 to see ME data with like same data from the same university. The BS/MS combination is also popular.
My daughter is a BME major planning to go on to a PhD program. Many of her BME friends who are going straight to work after graduation are double majors in mechanical engineering.
