Do I have to go to college? REVIVED

Yea, I'm pathetic enough to revive my own thread. Cheers.

For those who didn't get to read the original thread, heres the link:

http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?68281/94385

Anyway....

Pinkheart---you're too old fashioned. Get with the times, marriage is so archaic, all family does is WEIGH YOU DOWN.

Knightmare, you do have a point in moderation. It's good, lots of people live like that. But to me, it seems fundamentally flawed---why not go all the way? Sorry, only chicken*****s back out.

About finding a job I would like, give me a reccomendation. I just posted what I basically am like, give me an example job that you think I'd like.

But yea, I know God loves my noble soul. ^_^

Yay... I think you do have to go to college. But I come from a third world country, where people with such an opportunity would not even consider not going to college for a second.

I think that if you don't want to go to college. You should immigrate to a third world country and give a deserving child there the oportunity that you are squandering. Because, when you reflect on all that you have... the little that others have. It's just not fair... that you should waste your gifts.

Davidrune, get real.

Immigrate to a third world country? My *****buddy's would be too ugly for me to withstand! NOOOOOO!!! Chicks in rich countries are much more well groomed and clean. Seriously.

Besides, living conditions over there suck, and food is alot more expensive. Hell, everything is more expensive third world. I think the good ol' US of A is comfy enough for me. Sorry, forget that "deserving" kid in Ethiopia or whatever. I think I'll continue being a useless waste of oxygen as a patriotic American.

I just realized that I made a Chapelle parody.

How did you post 53 times ALREADY?!

You have vastly underestimated your rent/living expenses! This is not a plausible lifestyle, morally correct or not. If it were there would be no hunger or poverty in the US. Not to be a bestseller advocate, but have you read Nickel and Dimed?

Sorry GlowingAmy, I haven't read Nickel and Dimed. I'd like for you to point out where I've vastly underestimated my expenses, because I seriously feel as if I will be undergoing this plan of mine in the near future.

Anyway, I'm going back to trying to finish Ikaruga. That game is damn hard to one credit. Stupid Level 4.

Assuming success in finding $10/hr. job, and that location is not a problem, are you sure you can find a place to live for less than ~$450 a month? from what I have seen, there are only a few places in most large cities, and everyone is competing for them so although there are always a few vacancies it is hard (some are only student housing). An interesting anecdote in the book I mentioned: author is trying to find an affordable place to live, she checks out trailer parks within commuting (car) distance of her work and the cheapest one is $675/month, way above her budget (this is in minnesota). If you can't secure a place to stay you may have to stay in a hotel for a week or more thus eating up your food money for weeks! also, do you have a car? What if it needs maintenance, if you get sick or injured and need medicine, if you want to get someone something nice... have you got savings?
and a caveat: you WILL need vitamin pills if you plan on following that diet. I don't know what you eat now, but after a month of pizza and fish fillets there will be vitamin deficiencies and weird cravings.

Starman, have you ever see the movie "The Big Lebowski" ? Yeah, that's what happens when you go "all the way." You become a dirty, useless bum. Nothing necessarily wrong with that if this floats your boat...

I find it amusing that a forum full of college fanatics can't find a single good reason for someone to go to college.

Honestly, you can do whatever the hell you want. There is nothing we can say that will instigate a moral crisis on your part. There's no guarantee you will ever wake up one day and feel your life has been wasted or that there are absolutes beyond your base desires. There's nothing saying that it will be a waste on your part. Should you ever come to a dead end in your chosen path it will be interesting but nothing novel. Good ****ing luck.

I've always been frustrated by druggies, by dropouts, by people who choose the easy way out. Can you prove to a druggie that his happiness is less valuable than yours? Can you prove to a dropout there's something worth learning? Can you prove to someone you disagree with that their principles are flawed, that they're leading a worse life than yours? No, not really. They would have to try it and prove it for themselves. An English teacher at my school would say "The joy you get from (insert shallow passtime here) cannot compare to the pleasure I get from reading Plato." The woman he said that to was offended that he thought there were higher and lower forms of happiness. In the end, he would offer that "the unexamined life is not worth living." I've known your kind of happiness, it doesn't do much for me anymore. Until you try anything else, you will not grow. If growing isn't your thing, your priorities are screwed. If your priorities are screwed, again - good ****ing luck.

Understand the numbers. Most of kids out of college will not have a job that is in the field of their major. That you will have 4-8 careers in your working life. Probably twice that number for the number of jobs. College is really a finishing school/trade school. If you are a Type A kid, in the long run, going to college is not that important all though the contacts that you make in college may be more important later in life

you don't have to go if you find something you like to do. some successful people never went.

I've had a sort of moral crisis in the last few days, and now I don't feel like posting replies to what you guys brought up. Maybe some other time.

wholly crap david u have a lot of posts

While doing stats hw, i suddenly remembered this little thing. By the way, stats is WAY harder then calc b/c, at least, right now in the semester. Any course where missing 2 multiple choice questions equals getting a B on a test is officially classified as "LAME".

While at my local mosque, I saw this ad on the wall:

Room For Rent!
1 bedroom apartment, Irvine CA, close to UCI
$ 318 month for Room and Board
Must be Muslim brother or sister
Call # (xxx) xxx-xxxx

Actually, truth be told, I saw multiple adds that were really similar to this one, varying between $ 250-400ish. To all you people who thought its impossible to get an apartment for less then $450, eat your hearts out.

I also came across another source of free food---breaking of muslim fast at sunset during ramadan. Most local mosques provide this service, as well as and extended dinner after the breaking of the fast. Being muslim has its benefits, eh? Obviously, I would walk in, ask for food from people willing to give it to me, and after the dinner, ask if I can take some home, in which they would gladly give away!

Hey! Guess what else! Since I would automatically qualify in as the lower end of the financial spectrum with this kind of lifestyle, I would also get some of the zakat charity money placed on all muslims! That means FREE MONEY every so often, when someone is willing to donate. Since lots of people donate during Ramadan, what do you know, I'll get free money AND free food!

"I find it amusing that a forum full of college fanatics can't find a single good reason for someone to go to college. "

Arguably, that is one of the most correct statements I've seen on this thread.

"I've always been frustrated by druggies, by dropouts, by people who choose the easy way out."

Since I can't think of a good response to this, I'll just type in the Konami Code for you:
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, a, b, select, start.

Now I've got plus 30 lives! Go Contra!

"you don't have to go if you find something you like to do. some successful people never went"

Being successful sucks, too many worries. Seriously, being a bum is much better.

You guys suck! Here I expected lots of responses and all I get is a few -_-;. O well, I guess you can officially consider this meaningful post as a bump!

If you aren't motivated to attend college then you shouldnt because it would be a waste of time and money
But how I see it to put it simply is, college is what you have been focusing your educational life toward. From K-12 you have been attending the schools and generally taking the classes that others wanted you to, in college you can attend the school that will best support YOUR interests and abilities that YOU choose.
YOU are the one that is going to get yourself to class, to do the work to the best of your ability or not. You will have obligations and responsibilities that you didn't have in high school, but this IMO makes it much more meaningful and resonant.
However, I acknowledge that many people are afraid of their potential and take the safe way out of a less challenging lifestyle. That is totally up to you, only you know if you have what it takes to have goals and acheive them, but you won't know if you dont set any.

Dude, do you have GTA San Andreas? That game is crazy hard, because they don't let you use the directional pad to control the character.

Back to the topic at hand, don't go to college now, drink some beer, have some fun, its alot simpler (word?) than these chodes say it is. Just get a cake job like security guard or pizza boy and room with a buddy and you can live for a while like that. Then if you get bored (like I did) you can go to college. Enjoy your youth dude.

If you choose your college well, it can be a whole different ani,al than any school you went to before. There most be some intellectual things that interest you. Choose a college with no requirements and take things that really interest you. I can't imagine having much of a life in our generation withlout higher education. Even Bill Gates should have stayed to enjoy the Harvard experience. You are only young once and it's fun, I wonder what his hurry was.

Coming from someone who is youngest in the family and having one sibling who didn't finish college and one never going at all, GO TO FREAKIN SCHOOL!

"Dude, do you have GTA San Andreas? That game is crazy hard, because they don't let you use the directional pad to control the character. "

Although I haven't playn this game yet, I can almost gaurentee that it sucks. I'm too lazy to type up why, but, whatever, go amuse yourself. Once you get tired of that doggy-doo, play some REAL games, like GRADIUS V or IKARUGA, and have mass fun.

All you guys suggest I find something to do that interests me. But I don't have any academic interests. The only things I actually care about/enjoy doing can be shortened into this list:

*****ing
Playing Video Games
Eating
Sleeping

If theres a college that specializes in the above, name it. I'm there!
