-4 years of high school orchestra playing piano
-3 years of varsity cross country and track (3 varsity letters)
-4 years of being on the staff of school’s literary magazine, including 2 years of being an editor
-1 hour/week of tutoring middle schooler in English (for a total of about 8-10 hours, don’t really remember. might be able to continue this next year too)
-volunteering at local library 1 hour/week, around 82 hours so far
-job, don’t know how many hours/week but so far I have 202 hours total over 2 years (I only work summer and winter breaks)
-I’m also really into writing and do a lot of it on my own time, have been published in several places and won multiple awards, including Scholastic Regional Keys (2 gold 1 silver 4 honorable mention)
even if these are kind of weak, I don’t really have time to boost them seeing as how it is currently summer before senior year. I could make an effort in senior year to get more involved in clubs. I kind of did student newspaper and yearbook this year but didn’t really get anywhere with those.
They are impressive. While they’re not Harvard level (no major national/international recognition) but they are solid. I don’t think they’ll hinder your applications at all.
forgot to mention that I also have been taking piano lessons for 10 years and that I am a 3 time award winning member of some kind of national guild of pianists (basically every year I play 10 pieces in front of a judge and if I do well enough I get a certificate…don’t really know what this is, something that my piano teacher encourages all her students to do)
Your job on the application is to present your academic and EC accomplishments in the most positive light possible. Focus your application on what you HAVE done and don’t worry about anything you may feel is lacking.
It seems you only want to do this to buff up your apps and listing a bunch of clubs on your app does not impress adcoms; they care about leadership and achievement, not a big list of clubs and activities you signed up for. Since you will be applying in 2 mos after you could start these clubs in the Fall all you’ll be able to do for these new clubs is list “member X and Y” clubs.
Your EC’s are great for a young person and you should be proud of them. However, if you’re aiming for the super selective schools such as the Ivy League, then your EC’s are not remarkable. National and even international level recognition is not uncommon for successful applicants to the super selectives.
