Thanks! Be brutally honest! I am majoring in Economics and Mathematics. Possibly with a language minor if everything works out.

Your GPA is on the low side. Any particular reason for that? Test scores and ECs are great though. Are you pre-med?

Geographic diversity is a definite plus. (I’m from the NE too and I think my underrepresented state helped me get in.)

So in conclusion, chances of admission are good, but I definitely wouldn’t count on getting merit aid. The school is need-blind so I wouldn’t worry about it affecting your chances.

You missed the last sentence, and I guess I am defying my parent’ wishes in not wanting to go into medicine lol. I will do Economics and Mathematics.

The reason for my rather low GPA is because I don’t give a **** about history and all of the other “busy work” classes, and have gotten a B in AP Euro and a C+/B- in AP US. If it were my choice I would do mathematics all day. As long as I am really good at one subject and have an intense passion for it, is all that matters in the long run.

I think you have a good chance. If you have not already yet noticed, Rice loves geographic diversity since 50 percent of their students are from Texas. However, your GPA is somewhat holding you back. If you can raise it a couple of points during your senior year, you should be in good shape.

Also, Rice tends to be more holistic in their admissions process than most other schools… make sure you write really good, sincere essays.

Thank you for your evaluation slik nik. I feel very confident in my application, and my internship is basically the best thing on there that I doubt many students in the united states have.

Bump…

you have a good chance definitely. Though I suggest you try to retake the ACT and get it to 33-35… that is a good way to put less emphasis on the GPA. But a 3.5 UW isn’t bad

the 6 APs senior year WILL definitely look good. And the 9 APs total looks good also. Might want to take a science SAT II though if you say the science killed you… (don’t know how the ACT scoring works, but they might see it).

Bring up that GPA. 3.5 doesn’t sound good but the top 10% does… so I don’t know… I would still try to bring it up as much as you can. Good luck!

Yeah thanks. Any more??? I am pretty confident about my chances of getting into Rice. If down the road I get rejected, I mean, it is still a very tough school to get into.

Technically you can be pre-med with any major. The reason I brought it up is that Rice is seen as very science-y and I believe that one of their “Second Century” goals is to improve their other courses of study, so academic diversity is a plus too. Definitely play up your social-science-y-ness in your application.

It is hard to get into this school so nothing is guaranteed. You have a good shot but it isn’t guaranteed. Work on the essays!

When it comes to Rice I don’t think anybody can really chance you. When I went on a campus visit one of the professors described Rice as a “boutique” school and my chemistry teacher described them as “snobby”. Pretty much rice looks fro that special, unique quality that puts you ahead of others. I know this personally because the salutarion of my class did not get accpeted but I did and let me tell you my grades are not even as good as yours. My one advice ( assuming you have not turned in you application) is that you are extremly creative with your essay and the Box.

i never even sent in the “box” because i didn’t know about it… did everything through the common app website and my college counselor never mentioned it to me.

^^ i call one of my friends julia gulia! although she ended up not applying to rice, which is a pity, i think she would love it.

also, rice may be selective, but it’s not as bad as some schools yalestanfordharvardcough so i think i can say the OPs chances are better than a lot of people’s. like everyone said though, work on getting those grades up, and try to improve the ACT a couple points. the ECs show an incredible amount of dedication and leadership, which is a huge bonus.

ACT will go up. I got a 25 on the Science so you can imagine i did well on the other sections lol. I just hope I really have a fighting chance.

I have one question though. My Rank is top 10% WEIGHTED, but my UW rank is subpar for Rice standards. ( I am talking out of the top 25%) Will Rice take into consideration if my rank is unweighted???

JuliaGulia5409, what is the “box???”

http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/images/futureowls/FreshmanSignaturePage.pdf

Holy ****

10char

don’t worry about the box, it’s not important in comparison to the other components of the application - just have fun with it.
also, i’m not sure if i was in the top ten percent… very close, but my senior year grades definitely helped (they could have pushed me in). but i think what really helped me be accepted was the level of interest i expressed in my application. take advantage of those prompts! and also, if rice is your first choice, make sure to make that clear to your guidance counselor and the teacher writing your rec. they will most likely put in an extra word for you.

I don’t remember filling out that box either :(.

I don’t think us EDers knew about it

To echo others, I think you have a good shot, especially if you bring up your ACT. Regarding your GPA and rank, how good is your high school? If it is fairly rigorous, admissions will take that into account. Also, don’t worry about the box. I mean, don’t forget about it, but it is really hardly a factor in admissions. Its purpose is to give the admissions people something visual to remember your application by.

And yay GSA! I’m co-VP of Rice’s gay-straight alliance (Queers and Allies), so I like to see people who are in their high school GSA’s interested in Rice.
