I am interested in maybe pursuing lightweight rowing at an ivy league institution....
I have been told that the lightweight teams usually have one freshman 8+ for every incoming class but when i took a second look at some of the lightweight teams rosters i noticed....
Harvard: 27 freshman
Yale: 10 freshman
Princeton:15 freshman(last year)
Dartmouth:9 freshman
so what is the actual policy for these coaches?
and what is the max number of rowers/coxswains that they can recuit?

This is a question you will need to ask each coach. It will probably vary by school.
Also remember there are walk-ons…so not all listed will have been support through admissions with LLs. It seems unlikely that H would give LLs to 3 boats and the other schools would offer 1-2 boats? IDK…the coaches will be able to answer this for you.
Is this for mens or womens?

I think Dartmouth has spots for seven official LW men recruits so any others could be walk-ons (including experienced high school rowers who got in on their own as well as complete novices.) Last year (2010-2011) Dartmouth had two freshmen LW men’s boats -A and B - because they had so many walk-ons.

This is for men’s lightweight

pton recruits one freshman 8 (including cox) every year. the rest of the freshmen roster is made up of walk ons.

Yeah I have spoken to the Columbia coaches and the Yale coaches and they both said they recruit one 8 of rowers + 1 coxswain every year and then they get 10-15 walk-ons and usually 3 or 4 of the walk-ons will have some experience. The only Ivy I have heard of recruiting more than 8 LW rowers in one year was U of Penn (they recruited 12 one year) which might be due to their school being significantly larger than the other Ivies.

In addition to the 8 athletic recruits, there will be kids offered admission from the waiting list if the coach ‘asks’ admission.
