Do kids learn more at Dana Hall than at Deerfield?

What is this? self-infliction? ;)

But what NE boarding school produces the best and richest rock guitarists?

This is such an interesting discussion and one I have thought about a lot on my own. I can give an opinion on Vermont Academy’s situation. But first I want to say that I think VA is a fantastic school and does a great job with the kids there.

BUT, their 50% SSAT is not true. They don’t require the SSAT of all students. Students can submit a psych ed evaluation, and some who come late in the summer or enroll at mid year never take the SSAT at all. Also, my guess is that there average of the students who DO submit SSAT scores is closer to 30%. It is the norm, I’ve noticed, for schools which serve a range of academic abilities, to report an average SSAT score of 50%. when in fact they will mention that they do their best work with students scoring at a much lower level.

I do think that the SSAT can be very predictive of SAT scores. And that makes sense that the top tier schools have a very close correlation.

statistics nonwithstanding, the original question is flawed. SAT does not measure learning, it measures aptitude(thats why there are tutors out there that can easily raise the score by 200pts in a few months). Thus asking if kids learn more in a particular school b/c their scores go up from ssat to sat doesnt make sense.

Also, plenty of kids in schools like Deerfield cover topics far beyond precalculus (which is as far as SAT math goes). I think you would see a much greater disparity if you ask the student to understand books like Ulysses or do MVC, etc.
