Just wondering. It seems like all they do is study, study, study... do they ever just relax and participate in campus activities?

Yes, but it depends on the law school.

I'm lucky enough to go to a "fun" school - we do have good parties, lots of IM sports, and some good ruckusing. Not to say that we don't work hard - it's the definite "work hard, play hard" atmosphere. At any school, the first part is a given. Find schools that have the second part.

Alcohol will be your best friend in any high stressed job. That's a kind of fun.

I think that most people will say 1L is a tough year, but after that it depends on the classes that you take. There is typically voluminous reading that needs to be done, so this alone is time consuming.

1Ls completely lose all social skills; you'll spend 1L year talking about torts, contracts, and your classmates. It's like high school. Everyone takes the same classes, has the same schedule, and you're all in one building all the time.

During 2L and 3L year, people remember how to be normal again. I think that some of it is because everyone takes different classes - you're only required to take one or two courses during upper years - so you have to talk about something else. Also, students devote less time to studying (doesn't take as long to get through the material) and more time to other things - either having fun, hunting for jobs, doing law journals, or extracurricular activities.

Alcohol is, for better or worse, a large part of law student socializing.

Bring a pet to law school. You'll need the unconditional love and companionship.

If at all possible, room with an upper-class student or someone outside of the legal community during 1L year. It will help you to keep perspective.

stupid ten characters thingy

Law students get out more than med students.

AA, is that because students are better adapted to the law school format, that grades don't matter as much anymore, or that non-1L courses are not as hard?

First two. Actually, it's pretty much in that order.

I haven't had a class with as much reading as first-year Property. Mostly, I think it's because it doesn't take you as long to understand it. Also, the profs go easier on you during 2L and 3L year; they don't grill you on the details of every case - it's more of a general question - "What happened in this case?" and then you move on. So you don't need to read it as carefully.

BigRedMed,

Maybe it's just that law students get out more than people in Nebraska... :p

...Thats gonna have bigred grabbing his/her crotch...

such a low blow :)

O:-)

That's my halo. If he were in rural Vermont, there would at least be cow-tipping. What do you do in Nebraska - make moonshine? Crop circles?

Help me out here! Inquisitive minds want to know!

Do law students ever socialize w/ the undergrads at the university?

To answer the question not asked, yes, some male law students do date the undergrads.

There's not much inter-school socializition - at least here. Some students will participate in clubs that the undergrads have but we don't; some law students help to coach the sports teams. Otherwise, not much cross-socialization.

I think socialization is what you want it to be. Down here I know a few law students - one is a teammate of mine on the club hockey team (and my best friend on the team) and I know a few more because law students often enter teams in undergrad intramural competitions, which I play and ref.

Hmm, aa, I didn't really see that question not asked. Perhaps I'm a bit naive, but the comment seemed a bit presumtuous.

I've socialized with a few law students through a campus community center for a particular religion as an undergrad.

Just wait until you've seen half of your 1L class head to frat parties to hit on 20-year-olds in polos and skirts. I've also heard of two engagements - law students to undergrad senior girls.

^true, there have been quite a few law student sightings at my frat. Although one of the coolest people I know on campus is a first-year law student who hangs out on the undergrad campus a lot but has no intention (as far as I know) of dating an undergrad.

BTW: congrats ariesathena on your upcoming 2,000th post

My buddy at Boalt rarely gets out these days (2L). My buddy at UCLA, on the other hand (1L)..well... he's "social." Let's just say that he goes to some interesting offers on craigslist. ;)
