Do "Likely Letters" Make Students "Likely" to Enroll? An Informal Survey

Do I have a better chance of getting into cornell If I apply for an unpopular major??

I received an early notification of my acceptance to Cornell, and I will say it has made me far more inclined to pick Cornell over many other schools I applied to.
Before, if I was to be accepted to both Dartmouth and Cornell, it would’ve been an extremely difficult choice. Now, I would pick Cornell and not think twice about it.

My D received a “likely” letter from a state university. She was delighted to get it, but it hasn’t changed her mind about her top choices.

  1. My son did not receive a likely letter to a school that he was eventually admitted to. Based on the sampling here, there was no rhyme or reason as to who got the letters. One forum member didn't receive one, was very discouraged and eventually got in with a full tuition scholarship. For us, we found it added a lot of anxiety even though we we assured it didn't mean S wasn't a strong candidate. Additionally, overall this school seemed not to care about the applicants in the same way as the other schools. From the super reach to our state flagship, they have all communicated better and been more welcoming. So in our case, the likely letter was one more sign of them not seeming to think through the process and how good clear communication helps everyone involved.
