OK, so if med schools require a year of math, then could I take 10A, B, C even if I already got credit for A and B through AP scores? I understand that I wouldn’t get the credit for A and B from UCSD but would it factor into my GPA/fulfill pre-med reqs?

And as a side note to all those contemplating starting with 10C and then finishing by crossing over into the 20 series just to impress med school admissions: DON’T. Med schools won’t know the difference between the 10 and 20 series at UCSD…if you’re taking that road, at least take a class that’ll clearly look better on your transcript (Chem 6AH).

@GravityxZero35 yup. Math 20ABC is offered every quarter.

@GracedPresence Yes it would fulfill prereqs, but it looks bad if you get anything below an A. I don’t understand your reasoning regarding students crossing over from the 10 series to 20 series. Med schools could care less about the difficulty of classes. They only look at your GPA + make sure you fulfill their prereqs, which are pretty easy to fulfill (1 yr general bio, general chem, math etc). Hence, taking Chem 6AH does NOT “look better on your transcript”. At the very most, only the UCSD admission officers would be somewhat impressed with high grades in chem honors.

thx for your answer miniature
I got another q: so after i finish 10c in the fall, wut should i take in winter and spring quarters? Another GE? like physics?? (but if i take physics like 1abc, that needs 3 quarters, but i only got 2 quarters left, wut do i need to do??)
i am very confused about the scheduling and stuff…

@MiniatureDrone Wait, I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying taking the harder course (20 series) just to impress admissions officers is a waste of time because it’s not evident simply from a transcript that the 20 series required more work and effort than the 10 series. HOWEVER, getting an A in Chem6AH will be noted by a med school admissions officer because it says HONORS on the transcript. They will automatically assume it was a much more difficult class than regular chem (and rightfully so) and will, in turn, think “highly of you.”

My point is that if you’re going to beef up your transcript with hard classes, at least do it with courses that have clear labels on paper that it was a harder class. I mean the 20 series is mandatory for engineering majors, and many of those engineering majors are going to apply to med school…you’re not going to look special to med schools for having taken the 20 series even when you didn’t have to.

Also, why would it look bad if you get anything below an A? Are you implying if I took the 20 series and got Bs the med schools would be more likely to forgive me because they know the 20 series is harder? Not likely.
