Bumping this thread for CaitiMo

Does anyone have ANY suggestions for an uptempo legit piece with some nice high notes?
There Piazza but its over done and not easy to play. WSS is over done. Glitter and be gay isnt a great idea. Green finch is over done too. I've scoured all the old musicals that I can find on ITunes.
My ballad is Lying there from Edges, its on the low side.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Take a look at Carnival, Plain & Fancy, Guys & Dolls, She Loves Me. All have good uptempo soprano songs.

Uptempo sop stuff that is not overdone:

"Goodbye Emil" from Romance Romance
"Mr Right" from Love Life (Kurt Weill)
"Falling in love with love" from The boys from Syracuse
"One life to live" from Lady in the dark (Kurt Weill)
"This place is mine" from Yeston's Phantom
"Raunchy" from 100 in the shade - original key goes up to an A
"Many a new day" or "Out of my dreams" from Oklahoma
"Gooch's Song" from Mame
"Lets see what happens" from Darling of the day (Jule Styne)
"Finer things" from Jane Eyre - requires coloratura sop range though

I would avoid She loves me and Guys and Dolls. By the way, Green Finch counts as a ballad. ;)

Any word on whether Adam Rapp's Red Light Winter is becoming overdone on the audition circuit for guys? I'm considering it for one of my audition pieces.

Thanks so much.

I know some girls who did "Falling in Love With Love" from BFS. Not to say it's overdone; just not completely unusual.

"Goodbye Emil" is a belt song. :) Also, "Many A New Day" is definitely overdone.

I think I've found one. "a very nice man" from carnival.

"Goodbye Emil" has never been belted here (UK)...at least I have never heard anyone belt it, they have always given it the legit sop treatment. Also at the drama colleges.

I also think those songs from Oklahoma are done very frequently.

I understand that Miss Saigon may be overdone, but someone advised me to play to the fact that I am asian. I know the music and the context of each song extremely well, so I'm planning to either sing Movie in My Mind or I'd Give My Life for You for my ballad. I think it would be easier to get away because of my ethnicity. And I don't have much time to change my songs...I didn't think Saigon would be that overdone until I began reading this thread a couple of days ago. Also is Art is Calling for Me from the Enchantress overdone? I'm planning to sing that for my uptempo...the only problem is I cannot find any information about the show's plot or anything.

Art is Calling Me is overdone. If you are looking for a legit uptempo you may want to look at Yes My Heart from Carnival as a possibility. This would also be a good vocal and dramatic contrast to one of the Miss Saigon songs, or another song in that style.

hey!
i'm wondering if anyone could give an opinion about my songs:

what good would the moon be - street scene
disneyland - smile

this is for the video auditions for summer programs for 2009 btw

i'm still looking for a good monologue so if anyone has any suggestions that would be really appreciated :)

thankss

If you are looking to play on being Asian I would have a look at Flower Drum Song for some suitable material or singing "My lord and master" from The king and I, Miss Saigon really is very overdone.

Bwayjunkie - I think your song choices are very good.

My D is Asian and two years ago when she was auditioning, she used Lord and Master as her ballad. At first, we were reluctant to have her use a song that might be quite well known, but then figured a girl really shouldn't be singing it unless she WAS Asian, so it probably wouldn't be too overdone because there are so few Asian girls auditioning. And she never heard anyone else sing it at her auditions. I think one thing about it is, if you are a soprano, it really shows a nice range, where I think the Miss Saigon songs don't show off as much vocally. Her first audition was at Syracuse (we live there) and she didn't sing Lord and Master, and they heard her two songs, and wanted to hear more and flipped through her book and CHOSE it, and told her they LOVED it, so that is another reason she decided to use it for the rest of her auditions. (And she was accepted to Syracuse). Also after that audition, she used I Speak Six Languages from Putnam County Spelling Bee as her uptempo, therefore breaking all the "rules" about using a song from a current Broadway show (now closed but was current then). But she just decided to go with a total Asian package. And it worked well for her.

yay i'm glad my songs choices are good :D

btw just to point out.. i myself am asian (mixed - chinese filipino australian. btw i look wayyy more asian than anything else) and i never sing an overdone 'asian' song (ie. king and i, miss saigon). in my opinion, just because we're asian doesn't mean we're allowed to sing overdone songs.. cause it seems like just taking advantage of the fact that we're asian. of course it suits us more in terms of character but .... yeah...i never do that. just my 2 cents.... :P

this is merely just my opinion....hope no one takes this offensively... :S

x

Yes, I agree that if you are Asian you should use that as your selling point. To my knoweldge "My lord and master" is not overdone and it's also a hard song to sing, so shows true skill.

thank you all for your advice...bwayjunkie. i totally agree with you...i just didn't do my research enough so i didn't realize saigon would be THAT overdone. and i didn't think "art" was too. well now it's back to the drawing board. I may choose six languages and lord and master after all. they seem like good contrasting pieces. the only problem is my first audition is jan 4 and it's with syracuse...my top school. do you suggest that i begin working on those songs, and use them for the audition if i am ready by then but continue working on the pieces i was planning to prepare? yea, i think that is what i will be doing.

thank you again.

I would recommend that you use the songs you are most comfortable with, since your first audition is coming up so soon. Continue working on the new material, but don't do it till you can really nail it! Good luck at Syracuse.

I totally agree with what onstage said
