I’ve seen this on many lists. Not individual songs, just “No Jason Robert Brown.” Is it because his songs are over done or is there another reason?
I’ve often wondered that myself.
It is because his music can be difficult for an accompanist in terms of sight reading. This is also true with Adam Guettel music, as well as Sondheim.
Thank you, that’s very helpful!
That’s great info to know!
While the “do not” for JRB et al a good general guideline, there are songs by those composers that are good for auditions, and not difficult to play. Several years ago at NYU D was given one from Songs for A New World in her audition rep class by the music head for MT, (who had crossed over to do a master class at her studio) which is still in her book today. When in doubt, have someone play the song/cut through for you.
I have heard from college faculty that in addition to difficult accompaniment, songs by JRB and Sondheim are generally out of the depth of high school students to perform adequately for college auditions in terms of acting the song. The maturity level is just not there for just about any of them to pull off a rendition that college faculty want to watch. Of course, there are exceptions to this and any rule, however, since there are so few exceptions, most colleges that have such lists just generalize and proclaim, “Do not do Sondheim or JRB.” On a general basis, there seem to be many better choices out there that fit the capabilities of most high school age auditioners for colleges.
I have also heard the same, however my son did one (I Love Betsy) for college auditions. He does it well and that particular song was approved of at the summer intensive he attended. I will keep you posted on the results, so far we haven’t heard anything but the auditors seemed to respond well.
