sdaytime… I do not think soozievt means that the song is not age appropriate, but that it may not have been written early enough to meet the Golden Age cutoff that some schools use of 1960 :)

The guidelines that we use at my university for professional auditions are as follows:

NOTHING currently on or off Broadway
NOTHING on its 1st National tour
NOTHING by Andrew Lippa, Jason Robert Brown, Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, or Sondheim (with the exception of …Forum)
NO songs that made someone famous or that are associated with certain performers i.e. “Don’t Rain on My Parade” “I Could’ve Danced All Night,” etc.
NOTHING from a Disney/Animated movie.

There are of course others, but this list is certainly a beginning.
Hope this helps you guys out! :-)

thank you all sooo much!

Good luck wrightstateboy!

KatMT…I think two different conversations were going on. sdaytime was responding to onstage about the song from Full Monty. My list was for wrightstateboy. :)

I have been scouting all the senior showcase performances I can find on youtube- and what is interesting, among other things, is how many of the songs the seniors are performing that I have never heard of before. Some of the songs might be a little “old” for a 17/18 year old who is at the other end of the college journey, but checking out showcases might be a good place to look for songs which are very much not over-used.

I’m a soprano that has a pretty big range, i can go very high but i can go into a pretty low mezzo range too. I’m most comfortable somewhere in the middle.

I’m having trouble thinking of songs that are not on the many do not use lists. I was thinking of “Save the people” from godspell for one, but i need another and I am just so lost.

What’s your character type? Are you a character actress or a engenue (sp?)?

KatMT: actually, I was the one who made the “age-appropriate” comment, and it was in fact because the character in that show is usually played as mid-30’s. Sdaytime: that was my point; although the content of the song is innocent and loving, the character who sings it is older. Many colleges request that you stick to songs sung by age-appropriate characters. Some schools are strict about these requirements; it depends on where you are auditioning. As a graduating high school senior, you are only about half the age of the character in question – and as I mentioned before, I love the song but I think it’s pushing the limits a bit.

oops… I definately misread the thread connections . Sorry if I confused anyone!

PS… Breeze off the River is probably an age stretch for a 17 - 18 year old. The character is singing about his son. That is what is so powerful about the piece. It is a beautiful simple “pop ballad” that is about something that is not simple in the least. Great song!

Hello all! Very interesting stuff on this board! WIll be adding a lot of it to my rep list!!!

My songs for auditions are as followed, and subject to change with your help!:

Ballad:
Close Every Door–Joseph
Stranger in paradise-- Kismet

Up-tempo:
The Kite- Yagmcb
Can’t take that away from me-- Gershwin

I am not too attached to either of the golden age peices, and would like to find some better songs from that standard rep. Any ideas?

2nd tenor: Comfortable up to F or G. A’s are not too fun for me anymore!!! Sad news that ranges sometimes collapse in your senior year, right before auditions!!!

Looking forward to hearing from you!!! Thanks!

I personally would say reevaluate you ballads. they’re both over done.

breezer, i’m not sure exactly but I am definitely a stronger actor than singer. I have a pretty big range like i said on the last page, but i feel like my expression and acting throughout the song will make it a much better audition for me.

(those who didn’t read, im a soprano also mezzo. big range, no clue what songs to sing.)

the way you find out what type you are, and ultimately what parts and songs you should be learning can be as simple as looking in the mirror. Are you heavier/skinny? tall/short? do you look younger/older than your actual age? what color is you hair? what’s your voice type? Generally, or really stereotypically, thin, blonde sopranos are engenues (or the romantic lead for females) and heavier, brunette, alto are character. Truthfully, it is determined on a case by case basis. I hope this helps some.

My D has a song from Nine in her repertoire that she does very well & has planned to use in her college auditions. I am afraid with the movie and soundtrack coming out, this may put it on the “do not use” list. She disagrees, but I’m not so sure. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Oh well in that case, I am a soprano, skinnier, but more average than tiny, on the taller side, and i have reddish hair. I also look younger rather than older. Any suggestions?

Hi! I’m from Canada, and I know that’s kind of random. I’m at Sheridan college for the Prep program (a one year program designed to better prepare highschool students for auditioning for musical theatre programs across canada)
We start our audition workshop classes on the 11th of January and have been asked to come in with at least three choices of songs.
For my ballad:
Home - Beauty and the Beast (I know the Disney thing is bad news, but, it is only from the BWay musical, and I’ve had it cleared by the auditioners at the school so that’s not a problem)
or
Moonfall - The Mystery of Edwin Drood
contrasted with
It Might As Well Be Spring - State Fair
or
Life Upon the Wicked Stage - Showboat
or
Nobody Takes a Pass At Me - Pins and Needles

comments? suggestions?
I’m an average-size, run-of-the-mill soprano who’s not as comfortable in her high range as she should be (bad audition nerves!). Long curly ginger hair. I’ve had Anne of Green Gables suggestions because of this but, I didn’t really like any of the songs…
Thanks everyone!

Why is Disney “bad news”? If one is a clear Disney princess type, can’t one sing the song?

I don’t specifically know why Disney is no good. I do know that if you can that “disney Princess” a type, there’s other stuff you can sing that isn’t Disney.

In my opinion, Home from Beauty and the Beast is an appropriate MT audition song as it was written for the stage musical and not the Disney animated film. Similarly, I think an appropriate male song from the stage musical of B and the B, If I Can’t Love Her, is appropriate for a young actor to sing for a MT audition. I would shy away, however, from Disney songs written for the animated films. As you say, the auditors at the school told you that Home is fine.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast isn’t on the list of do not sing shows because it is a good show at that. The reason why it’s unspoken word not to Disney is because everyone knows it and it tends to be overdone. A lot of people train on Disney as well, I mean, if I hear one more 14 year old girl singing Home, Part of Your World, or A Change in Me, I’ll probably vomit. People say not to do it for precaution because you won’t stand out from the others.
