I have a daughter that was diagnosed in first grade with ADD. We spent thousands of dollars on private testing because we knew something was up. Because she wasn't really able to read or write and also had speech problems, the Psychologist recommended more testing at a later date. School services seemed to keep her moving along until this year, 6th grade, now she seems to have hit a wall. She has an IEP and we recently had the yearly meeting. Now, with her worst year ever, even with long homework sessions and extra help, we were shocked at the IEP meeting when we were told she no longer qualified for Special Education services! Because she had scored "a few points above the cut off" on a couple separate diagnostic tests, she was basically being cut off. Because of the ADD diagnosis, they would allow her extra time in a quiet area-- that's it. Another parent told me her daughter had test taking difficulties, and was receiving services that were cut off even though they were still needed. We think the school is attempting to get students out of Special Ed to use the money elsewhere. Does anybody know what NY schools' responsibilities are? I really don't have thousands and thousands for expensive private testing. We have a large Special Ed dept and Educational Psych services professionals, but it seems they are not being utilized to help our children! I'm very concerned about my daughter's future! And the girl with the test taking difficulties is in HS.
