Do parents need to come on move in day?

Do parents need to come on move in day? I ask this because I'm coming from 300 miles away and I dont think my parents can make it :(

So do they need to come? Did yours go with you???

i am a transfer student btw

Wow that’s really far away. No, parent’s don’t need to be there on Move-in day…I mean college is your first step towards adulthood, so it is in now way a requirement.

My mom didn’t go with me on my move-in day, she made it horribly emotional for no reason, but it made it easier to let go by moving in on my own. Hope this helps.

Your parents don’t have to come, but the vast majority do, especially for freshman move-in. As a transfer student, you will probably see a few less parents helping students move in (I’m assuming your housing arrangement has mostly upperclassmen), but there still will be a pretty large number. Obviously it’s not the end of the world if your parents can’t make it. You will just be saying your goodbyes earlier than other students. If you can, have your parents come down on a weekend during the school year, and you can take them out to dinner and show them around.

I’m very sorry to hear that, but to answer your question, no; parents do not have to come. They come because they want to help moving all the stuff their kid brought, but that’s about it. It’s not like they have a paper to sign or something. They come, they help out, hug their kid goodbye, and leave.

I went to Rutgers Pharmacy School 20+ years ago and no, my parents did not move me in. It was fine. I lived and prospered ;)

(I was a transfer, too)

btw most parents leave right after helping unpack and set up. If they stay, it is awkward.

Rutgers doesn’t offer parents all the ceremonies, etc that many private schools do for new students & their parents. As noted above, Rutgers parents are glorified movers and transportation providers w credit card for last minute needs.
