Do people attend with a declared major and interest in sociology?

I know students at MIT sometimes change their major to or double in sociology, but are there incoming freshmen already with aspirations and interest in a field other than a technical one?

Yes, yes there are  (One of my closest friends came in as a lit major. I have other examples, but I’m assuming a simple yes-or-no will do.)

I would also like to note that some people come in with no idea at all.

cool, but I assume that your friend and others already have somewhat of an interest in science?

Uhh, does MIT even have a Sociology department?

Yes. To come to MIT, you should have some interest in science - enough to get you through the GIRs and to make you the kind of person that would thrive in an environment where everyone else loves science and most people major in it. But that doesn’t mean non-science majors will be sad here. Depends entirely on the person ^^

Not a department, but there are degrees available with a large amount of overlap with the anthro department.
(The traditional division between anthro and socio that I’ve heard is that anthro studies past cultures and socio does present. Our anthro does both.)
