Hi, I'm a sophomore in high school and I am interested in becoming a petroleum engineer. Do thy travel a lot? Can you have a family and be one? Do you have to travel? I am fine with relocating to Texas, but I don't really wanna live in a foreign country. Please help! Thanks

If you live in Texas, you should be okay. It depends on the company. You would probably have to travel some instate, though, and maybe sometimes to Louisiana or Oklahoma. You will be limited in your options and salary if you want to stay put in one city, and even country, though.

Depends. If you want an office job, then you won’t travel much at all. If you want a on-site job, you will be doing a LOT of traveling, often oversea. My grandfather was a petroleum engineer for a major oil company, traveled almost everywhere before becoming management in his company. He’s been to Europe, South America, Asia, Middle East… as well as various oil rigs in the Gulf and other places.

Usually, if you get an on-site job, you are away for 2-3 weeks, and then get a week or 2 break to come home.

Also, office jobs for starting petroleum engineers usually pays a lot less than on-site jobs.

^^^Oh, yes, you’re definitely going to make less money if you do an office job. It makes sense. More risk, more time away from family, they’ve got to compensate the employees somehow for making that sacrifice.
