do recommendations really help?

i remember them saying that recommendations are like 4th in their list of determining you, but is it really more important than extra curriculars and whatnot?
i got my recommendation from a teacher who gradutated from JMU probably 3-5 years ago, so im hoping that helps more than just a recommendation from another teacher.

sorry.. i don't know the answer to your question but i wanted to ask what high school you go to?

i go to chantilly

I don't think JMU even requested a recommendation, so doubt if it will have a big impact. But I'm sure if you send one it can only help you. But a good recommendation won't make up for a lake of EC's. Hope that helps.

im not really saying like it matters more than EC's i mean i think ive got enough EC's but like im just wondering if it really makes that much of an impact

i'm guessing that it won't have much of an effect, since, as someone else pointed out, it's not even required. recs are probably one of the last things JMU looks at, and are probably only reviewed thoroughly in a few of the borderline and special cases they receive.

i kno they arent required and whatnot but when i visited their campus the dude said the recomendation is higher on their list and when the dude came to my school he said the same thing.. but im assuming they were just blowing smoke up my.. ohwell i just wantto kno if i got in or not now..

I was looking at the status of my JMU application online when I found the following....
"There are six factors which will be used to evaluate applicants for admission to JMU. The order of importance for our decision process is: Program of Study, Academic Achievement, Standardized Test Scores, Secondary School Report Form, Extracurricular Activities, and an optional Personal Statement."
