Do sports help at all with the admissions process at MIT?

Hey guys, I had a question about MIT.

It would definitely be a school that I would like to go to, but I know that my GPA etc. are pretty low for a school of this caliber. To give some stats:

GPA: 3.5 unweighted/4.0 weighted (only 10th and 11th grade) --> HUGE, HUGE upward trend however

Counting freshman year my unweighted would be 3.57 (10th grade was a really really bad year..)

AP classes taken:

AP Physics - 5
AP US History - 5
AP Calculus B/C - 5

AP Chemistry - 4
AP Gov/Econ - 5
AP Statistics - 5

SAT: 2210 (again, I feel this is low for a school like MIT)
SAT 2s: Math - 750, Physics - 750

Clubs:

small club I was an officer of - 3-4 years

Math and Science club - 2 years

Physics and Astronomy club - 2 years

editor of a magazine (for a non profit organization)

The problem is that my sophomore year was really, really bad (I actually ended up getting a few Cs... =/). Junior year had a huge upward trend though.

So I was wondering.. do sports help at all with the admissions process at MIT then? I run cross country/track, and I'm pretty sure my PRs would be able to get me onto any D3 school. I would also like to continue running in college; would being able to run on the team/contribute in that way help at all with the admissions process (as a buffer for the grades..)? Has anyone had any experience with sports, etc.? Thanks a lot.

That is all.

What are your times? If you're planning on being recruited DIII, I'd guess you would need (look at your particular event(s), you don't need to be both a star 800m and 3200m guy):

400: 50
800: 1:58
1600: 4:25
3200: 9:30
3 miles: 15:20
5k: 15:40

These are just my estimates. They might be a little high, but this is college athletics. In any event, the MIT track/XC team isn't exactly UCLA, so athletics will be a plus to your app.

Sorry, I re-visted this thread and I'm guessing you're a girl. All the times I gave were for guys.

If you play sports, that will be a good thing since it shows you have balance.
If you're a recruited athlete, that will count as much as any other major EC.
If you're like a national champion of something, that could be a hook.

Yes, sports help you to get into MIT. But be aware that MIT does not offer any athletic scholarships of any kind.
