Do the type of extracurricular activities matter for college applications, preferably top schools?

Hi I’m new and I’m a HS junior.

Lets say my extracurriculars are MUN, key club, StuCo, etc.
My awards are also very broad, like art awards, spanish awards, service awards, and more.
I have nothing distinctly science related except that I took a robotics course a couple years ago.

But if I choose to major in engineering in a top school, for example Duke, would it affect me that my ECs aren’t science related?
I’m not sure what I what to major in but engineering is a strong option for me.

Yes, it would affect you - especially for science related majors. At the very least, you should take the most rigorous courses available in STEM at your school. You should also score well on all standardized tests related to STEM (SAT/ACT, Subject tests, and AP exams). Extracurriculars in science, such as the Science Olympiad, Math team, science competitions, and Robotics team are all pretty necessary to get accepted at top engineering schools, with few exceptions. So just get going on those science ECs! And write good essays that somehow show your interest in your major. Good luck!

thanks! this was great help
