Do u have to do P.E at preparatory schools?

I wanted to know whether or not P.E or a sport was compulsory, and can u do another activity or community service instead of P.E? On Deerfield's FAQ, it says that P.E isn't compulsory and community service can substitute it, but what's the case with other schools like Lawrenceville and Peddie? Do u have to part of a team?

P.S: I'm obviously not the sporty type..

The policies vary by school. The basic model would be, all students must play on the school’s teams. As I understand it, that was pretty common until recently. At present, many schools will allow a student to substitute something else for team sports, such as yoga or dance classes, particularly as students get older. Some schools will allow students to petition to substitute other activities, such as drama or community service, for sports.

It varies by school, and it’s a good question to ask during revisits, or to ask tour guides.

Don’t assume that you wouldn’t have any fun on a sports team, though. Many schools have J.V., or Thirds teams, which aren’t as intense as varsity teams. Some schools offer programs for freshmen which allow them to try out many different sports.

Exeter has a PE program throughout freshmen year for freshmen not involved in interscholastic sports, but otherwise, if you’re not in a competitive sport for a term, you get to choose a “club sport” to be in. Club sports range from fitness courses, club aquatics, some sort of skiing, cycling, running, squash, all sorts of things.

If you’re involved in a drama production during a term, that counts as your sport.
Also, you can try out to be in a thing called Music Sports where you can use around half of your sports time to practice music and just be doing some sort of free exercise during the other.

During Junior and Senior year, students can “opt” for a single term each year, which means that they have 2 blocks free in the middle of the day instead of having sports at all.

Lawrencevile requires that its students are involved in some sort of athletic activity each term. If you are not interested in interscholastic sports, the options are lifetime (freshmen/seniors) and house (sophomores/juniors). lifetime is sort of like gym class focusing on a specific area and house is playing a sport against other houses (think harry potter and quidditch). House and lifetime meet 3 times a week, interscholastic sports meet 6 times a week. Another option is dance which I think meets 3 or 4 times a week. If you are really not interested in physical activity, then you can bean athletic trainer or manager for for the interscholastic teams. Finally if you have a particular sport that you would like to play that the Lawrenceville does not offer, then you may apply for an athletic exemption. Ex: kickboxing is not offered, but one can get an exemption.

I hope this is clear enough, please ask if it is not enough :)

@LLVILLE, so in a nutshell, we HAVE to do sport and P.E in general or can we get the credits through doing something like community service as I mentioned previously or doing a less physically exerting sport like say golf (sorry if I offend anybody! :D) or badminton that will still count as sport? Do you HAVE to be on a team? Whether it be J.V or house, or lifetime or whatever?

In a nutshell, you have to do something sports related and you cannot get out of it via community service. Community service is a separate graduation requirement. We do have golf team and our own course on campus.

If you want them to be, house and lifetime are NOT physically demanding. Neither is managing a team or working with the athletic trainers.

Just wondering, How good are the Basketball teams in Exeter? Thanks for the help.

Btw, Can someone post a link to the “start a new thread” button because i’ve no idea how to get there. Thanks!

They should have sports at all schools at different levels, so you should be able to find something that suits you.

One question: Is there a PE class that everyone takes, or just after school sports? Do they grade your sports/athletics?

vivsters - if you are asking about lville, there are no gym classes that everyone takes and you are not graded

since at most schools sports are mandatory for all 3 seasons, most schools do not have pe because they have sports practices after class

At small schools like Groton and Middlesex, you are required to play a sport in each term. However, at Groton, at least, after 3rd form (9th grade), you can choose an FSA (Faculty Sponsored Activity). Some examples include music, art, and various outdoor activities such as gardening (there’s even a Treehouse FSA!).
