Do universities adjust grades that are inflated

My teacher said that the GPA that my school gives is usually lower than what colleges calculate GPA for admission since a 90% is a B+. However this is because my school does calculate an A+(98%-100%) into the GPA as 4.33

Is this true then? So for every B+ I have gotten in High School colleges will calculate it into the admission GPA as if its a A-? Will colleges still see the B+ or will it just be seen as an A if converted?

I don't understand how though because in my report card its a B+, how will colleges know that a 90% in my school is a B+ instead of other schools that have it as an A- or A? My report card and transcript does not list the percentage of the earned grade since its a 12 point scale.

There’s a place on the common app for your counselor to send a report of how things work at your school, I believe.

But will colleges actually make all B+s that I have gotten into A-s? So a B+ will count as an A- in the GPA? My math teacher is the first and only person to have ever mentioned this. I am not sure if its true or not because no one else has ever mentioned this not even the counselors or school handbooks. Something that important should have at least came up.

no they will use a formula to create their own weighted gpa. It’s still a B+, it just might be weighted higher.

I know but some colleges ignore the + and - signs such as the UCs and its pretty much A,B,C,D,F with no plus or minuses.

So a 92% won’t count as an A- at least? It is kind of unfair in my opinion that some schools have 92% as A- or even an A.

A- starts as 93% no rounding so even a 92.5% is a B+ :(

When a panel of admission counselors came to my D’s school, they ALL stated that they re-calculate GPA based on their own factors. Each school has to submit a school profile. For example, my D’s school does not weight at all so everyone’s average falls below 4.0 (even though approx. 40% of the grad class has taken at least 5 AP exams) That being said, each year a really high percentage make tier 1 schools, including ivies.

There is an interesting video (maybe someone has link) where an adcom at a top school takes 4 or 5 students with same GPA and then discusses and re-calculates. Some went higher and one even dropped .8! Your school profile might give you some insight into how a college might view its academic strength.

I think you should just focus on being the best student you can be and everything will fall into place.

As others have said, it really depends on the school. I’ve been to over 20 information sessions - I ask if a college will recalculate (or, in my case, calculate - my school doesn’t do GPA), and some say weighted, some say they will look at unweighted, some say they don’t care, some say they will get an “estimate,” etc.

Keep in mind that 99% of colleges say that they evaluate you in the context of your school - not every school is exactly the same, including in GPA calculation. They’re going to compare you to other people at your school based on GPA, but not to people outside of your school (at least, not on the basis of GPA).
