Is it possible to become both a DO and MD when becoming a Doctor?
Why would you want to? Wouldn’t that be about 8 years of schooling instead of 4?
I don’t know my friend wants to do that but he doesn’t realize what’s he in for
It wouldn’t make sense. DO and MD are essentially the same degree. DO includes more coursework in physical therapy methods of treatment, but that’s about it. MDs and DOs both have to take the same medical license exams. There is a movement to eliminate the distinction between the two degrees, which would be helpful in my view, as people are clearly confused.
The real differences are:
DO students have to take 200 more hours class work for OMM and pass the Comlex test which essentially the same as USMLE. But Comlex is less being recognized by hospitals with any specialty. Basically with Comlex you can only become internal medicine, family doctor and such, exceptions do happen but rare. So, a DO student has to take the USMLE also to enter competitive specialties.
Here is a professional analysis on if a DO student should take USMLE

I think your friend doesn’t understand this issue. If he does the MD route, why do the DO route (or vice versa).
I can’t imagine a med school giving a seat to someone who is already a physician.

The way you wrote that suggests wanting to become a DO and MD at the same time (when becoming a doctor). If that’s the Q, then the answer is NO.
