She thought it was cute.

It’s all a stereotyping issue.

In HS the stereotypes were usually true, but in college they’re not and it’s kinda annoying ha ha.

I actually know exactly what you mean by this, but although I’ve been surprised, I certainly don’t dislike good students who don’t “act” like the perfect student. There is on kid who basically flies under the radar at our school, but who was a NMF. When he got into Georgetown EA and another girl didn’t, a lot of people were kinda nasty because they assumed he “didn’t work as hard” and “didn’t deserve it” since he’s kinda quiet. Well, he got into Harvard RD. He’s too nice to do anything like this, but I totally hoped that he would go “suck on THAT!” to one of the pretentious, overachiever, “how did YOU get in there??” kids.

Needless to say, he didn’t. But still…if you’re a good student, and you don’t act like a stereotypical nerd, more power to ya. I hang with more “jocks” than “nerds” myself.

…aw man…I think I am that chick.
I act incredibly stupidly but have a wide range of knowledge pertaining to my two favorite subjects: science and govt o_x. There was, however, a girl with a pink mohawk in my psych class. Her father went to Oxford and she had applied to Princeton. That was a “what the heck” moment for me! Anyhow, we became friends. :p

Ya people who did not know in class (like kids in my grade and other grades who did not really know me)use to assume I wwas near ■■■■■■■■ like you know those kids who are in the special class with 5 teachers for 10 kids. Usually these people will not admit it, but one came up to me and said how did you get into university, I thought you were like ■■■■■■■■. I actually liek pretending to be dumb because I prefer when people underestimate me, it makes it easier for me to beat them in courses

I know a girl like this. And I know she’s smarter, we’ve had actual conversations when me and her went to an art competition. But then she is an idiot in class, like, says stupid things like “Whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut??? READING!?? Ewwwwwwwwwww” or when there was a discussion about the middle east she kept bringing up Mexico. God she’ll act real stupid and I question if it’s an act but I just don’t get it. No guys like her for it, what is with that?

About 12 out of the top 50 kids in my school are like this, the best of whom is going to Duke.

Is everyone done bragging yet?

i’m the opposite: dorky but still not too smart naturally, although it’s not like dorkiness propagates intellectual superiority.

"Also, I feel like you’re just jealous that you see all these equally smart people and youre still a dork. "

How do you know if I am dork? For your information, I don’t feel jealous of anyone, but I feel annoyed at the fact that those “equally smart people” that you are referring to apparently are not too smart since they judge people according to superficial criteria and expect good and bad students to resemble certain stereotypes. I don’t think that those people are very smart but even if they are there is still very little for me to feel jealous of; in my opinion their attitude is a lot worse than a lack of general intelligence.

I know one guy who is T H I S smart and he wears jeans with a hole in the knee everyday, and he’s going to HARVARD!

Then I know another guy, who’s only about THIS smart, but he wears nice docker khakis every day. He’s going to Rutgers.

IT MAKES NO SENSE.

Interesting how many people think they’re very intelligent AND have a persona that doesn’t show it.

I wonder if any (or how many) are sub-par/average and don’t know it yet.

yes justtotalk, that is exactly what I was thinking.

I also think it’s interesting how no one is actually answering the question that was being asked. I suspect this is partially due to the wording of the initial question (sounded pretty accusatory…).

But to add my two cents: It really bothered me in high school when students I knew were using non-prescribed attention medications (like adderol or ritalin) in order to get work done in one night that they would otherwise have taken them longer. I realize these drugs don’t actually add intelligence, only focus, but they have been shown to raise SAT scores and the like. Drugs like this are prevalent in high schools and allow lazy student to procrastinate more than they would otherwise be able to. They also, if an already smart child has access to them, give others a leg-up that stems directly from access to cash.

It drives me nuts that I actually have ADHD and can’t have my medications because of lack of insurance when idiots just abuse them anyway.

The original question concerns “good students.” A good student may or may not be very intelligence. Nowhere does the it say anything about intelligence.

I am so lazy in school and while about getting hw, etc. sleep, etc. and I always discuss NBA and pornography in school.

I’m going to Williams and graduating in the top 5% of my class.

Meh, it comes with the territory.

For me it was backwards. When I was terrible, people thought I was super intelligent because of how I talked and presented myself, even some times how I dressed.

Now I wear like, MMA shirts, Nike’s, I work out more and people think I’m a jackass.

Once I start talking, people wonder if I’m a kiss ass or something.

I think over a semester, you learn who the good students are, regardless of their personalities, just because of how consistent they are, how they act during exams and how much they show up to class.

In the beginning of the semester, no one cares much for me. By mid terms, they’re sitting next to me, asking me to study with them and so on. I think a lot of people on College Confidential are going to fit that criteria because we value our education enough to seek guidance and information. Mediocre students aren’t going to take haven here.

Typical Williams student :)

My high school’s valedictorian this year was a baseball player who’s going to UT Knoxville I think. He’s a good guy, and he seems smart enough, but you wouldn’t expect him to be, y’know, valedictorian just from his looks & behavior… and there are definitely students who work a LOT harder than he does, too. But he had a 33 ACT and everything so I don’t know
