"Do You Have a Tutor?" Survey

The first and only time I had a tutor was senior year of high school for AP Calculus, mainly because my teacher was awful and didn’t teach us anything so I needed someone to teach me something useful.

This is my tutor.

But seriously…I had a “math study skills” class in 7th grade because of my dyscalculia problems, which is sort of like a tutor. And I went to after school tutoring sessions for APUSH (because I got sick and missed class a lot junior year) and AP Chemistry (because I didn’t understand ANY of that crap). But I’ve never had like a “paid” tutor.

@Bassoonapus It can be hard to study math if you simply don’t understand what the hell is going on. Sometimes it’s really helpful to have someone else go over the material with you and explain things differently. The textbook only gives a few examples and if you have a bad teacher, you’re kind of screwed (unless you’re a genius). Not everyone can just teach themselves math like the majority of this site.

@Follow Don’t worry. Bassoonapus is a rising freshman, and their time will come when they need extra help.

I agree with FollowTheReaper and Niquii

I haven’t had a tutor yet lol, they’re too expensive, and no one at my school is that nice to actually tutor anyone.

I’ve never had a paid tutor, but I certainly have stayed after class or school for extra help. I’m sure there will be more times like that next year.

Most tutors don’t care about who they are tutoring only the money! They are a rip-off and (not their fault ) using them may also make the student lazy !
Even with the best tutors a student may be unintentionally misled ! Case in point: My son was taking honors biology and had a tutor ( an honors bio teacher from a different school). He grasped the material pretty well and therefore would not go to extra help like most students in the class( understandable) ! His teacher would reveal project hints as well as lab tips that would allow students significant advantages that hours of tutorial could never give! Tough lesson and painful! We PAID TO LOSE! Also when the teacher found out he had a tutor she became very mean and unfair ( unacceptable in my book) ! What I did not know at that time until over a year later was that my sons teacher herself was a tutor of students in other school districts ! Oh well! So unless it’s math difficulty and some clarifying is necessary I DO NOT RECOMMEND TUTORS!

I am a tutor, and my boyfriend tutored me in calc, if that counts =]

I want one.

Live for today, plan for tomorrow.

Um… I’ve never really needed one… some of my friends had one when we had this horrible french teacher (or series of 10 french teachers in one year)… I’ll probably get one sometime, especially for AP tutoring to help with getting 5s on exams but teachers at schools have generally been super generous about tutoring. Most of them say “I cant stand people who pay other to tutor them when I’ll stay after and help you for free” or something to that affect. Most teachers at my highschool stay at least one day after school a week for a designated tutoring or (since i have a huge school) one of the other teachers teaching the same subject is there after school.
Also, I wouldnt say they’re too expensive. 20 bucks at most a day, and probably only once a week. The tutor isnt teaching you, he’s just answering your questions, clarifying, explaining. You go in already having a basis of what you’re learning , they just guide the way. It doesnt take that long to go through this process… they come back again when some new subject has come up in the next weeks lesson. etc. And if you really want some help, just honestly ask your teacher, or any teacher to help you. They’re required to stay a certain amount of time after school anyways. They have these jobs because they love to teach–they’d be fine with giving you some extra help as long as you’re respectful about it.

Untrue for some tutor(s)! My mom tutored one kid on her SAT. That girl didn’t do as well as my mom planned. mom feels horrible, horrible, horrible… about that. She keeps talking about it, it drives me nuts!

Yes, I do have a tutor. And contrary to the beliefs of other members replying to this thread, its not because I’m ‘stupid’. I go to an IB school, but plan to take GCSEs, an English qualification not available where I live. My tutor teaches me the required subjects since not all of them are covered in my current lessons. I think it’s a great resource and has actually helped me in my normal school lessons by giving me a different perspective on topics we study.

nope. i find it’s more beneficial for me to learn and comprehend things on my own

Nope, I prefer google.

I do tutor others occasionally.

Nope; I live in an affluent area.

I tutor others occasionally, though I always refuse payment.

Khan Academy and PatrickJMT are my tutors :D

Nope. .

Nope, never. I live in a fairly affluent area, though my family is well below the median household income for the US. And I wouldn’t say I’ve tutored anyone per se, but I’ve definitely helped some people out on a regular basis.

No, I like teaching myself with books and Internet resources. But I think I would enjoy being a tutor!

Nope, my parents do not push me nor can they afford a tutor, my ambition’s motivate me to excel.
