Do you have to be a feminist to go to Mount Holyoke?

I am not a raging radical feminist. I believe that women and men should be treated equally, yes, but I don’t actively speak or do much about this. I am a straight woman. I love Disney princesses (even though they aren’t independent women). I like boys. Would I be a minority at an all women’s college? Is there others like me at MHC? I need to make my deposit by midnight tonight and am wondering if the fact that I am worrying so much about going there means that I shouldn’t go at all?

I went to MHC. I am not a raging feminist. I am not a lesbian. I had many friends who were like me. If you really feel uncomfortable then maybe you should go somewhere else. But…there are many different types of women at MHC. They are definitely not all raging radical feminists.

My daughter committed to MHC last night. She really liked the young women there and on the FB accepted students page. She felt that they were very open, accepting and down to earth and definitely did not get a raging feminist vibe. Her host at her overnight said that a number of them found boyfirends at Hampshire and UMass.

When we toured as a family last summer we thought that the students there were really sweet and helpful. One of them did look like a lesbian and she was also really sweet and charming, not at all the angry in your face type. I really don’t think you would be in the minority as a straight woman.

I think you’re confused about what feminism is.

I agree with mountain goats… Yeah you kind of have to be a feminist, but your definition of feminism is the one most people follow. We ain’t all radicals, but if you’re not open minded to new ideas maybe this isn’t the place for you, either.
