Berkley is a solid school and definitely gets strong IB exposure, especially on the west coast. Considering your school is definitely not a non-target, your major won’t matter nearly as much as you might think. What will matter, however, will be defending your decision to choose major X (which is unrelated to IB), what you like about major X, how the skill set necessary to succeed in major X has prepared you for IB, and, most importantly demonstrate and support your interest in IB. The last point can be achieved in a variety of ways, including taking some finance/accounting courses, networking, keeping up with the news and, of course, joining your school’s IB/Wall St/Finance club.

Regarding which types of shops to target, your best bet will be the BBs, MMs and decent size boutiques. The reason why I say this is that you will need a firm that offers a standard training program, and while boutiques often like students from more diverse backgrounds, because they lack a standard training program, they often need students who can hit the ground running - at least in terms of technical knowledge.

Network, show your interest and make a big push.
