Is it very important to have like amazing ECs such as like research, organizing events, curing cancer, etc.. I mean, I'm doing things that I love but nothing is like stand out amazing..
I'm looking at UPenn mainly.. and maybe Columbia and Cornell (all reaches but really would like to go)

How would you say my EC's are.. thanks

-Varsity Tennis Team: (9th, 10th, 11th(captain), and 12th as well but it's in the spring so i don't think i should write it if I am applying in the fall/winter)-coaches award in 10th grade; MVP award in 11th; scholar athlete every year

-Varsity Swim Team: (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th(captain))-Scholar athlete every year

-Varsity Cross Country Team: (10th, 11th, 12th)-scholar athlete every year

-National Honor Society (may run for an office next year.. probably tutoring chair)

Volunteer Work:

-About 5 hours every week volunteering at an animal rescue and adoption center (started beginning of junior year)

-Made sandwiches for the poor: 1 hour about every week(started beginning of junior year)

Work Experience:
-Held same job as a lifeguard/swim instructor since 14 years old (5-6 hours a week including summers)

Probably will do the summer program at either Penn or Columbia

Are my EC's like not "good" enough.. ahh if someone can give me some input it will be really nice!!! i REALLY want to go to Penn (CAS)!!!!!!

I like your ECs actually and I definitely do not think you are lacking. If your SATs and GPA are good too, I'd definitely call you a good applicant.

would they look down that i didn't join any school clubs? i mean.. its very difficult to join a club while playing a sport every day after school..

Lemme put it simply -- EC's plus grades plus essays -- you have to cross a certain bar. AFter that, the HYPS type schools basically select among a broad variety of talents + interesting students. So really it's somewhat your luck in that sense -- while they are deliberate + may not just flip a coin, it kinda amounts to that for the student, because all he/she can do is try things he/she is passionate about.

bumppppp... do you think these are good enough for the schools im interested in?.. do i have sufficient leadership positions.. idk someone help thanks!

I definitely think that they are enough. See, the thing I say is to have quality EC's rather than quantity. I don't think ivy's want to see you butter up an activities list with EC's that you aren't committed to, or care very little about. I say you have a good amount, but for Ivy's, they might look for just a little more. (Perhaps more community service, volunteering thing). School's shouldn't pay attention to quantity, but it is a sad fact that many do. I say keep up with the excellent work you are already doing, and only good things will come out of it. Good luck to you!

Nyorker. You are either quite ignorant or just plain narcissistic.

You know those are strong ECs (as the poster above mentioned, three varsity sports, stable job, community service...ect.) and you just want to hear people tell you that your ECs are strong.
Or, you actually have no idea that the ECs you undertake are strong and will look good on your app. I quite frankly doubt you do not realize this.

So let me play your game: OMG AMAZING ECs! SUPER IMPRESSIVE.

wait haha i'm sorry but i honestly thought mine like didn't compare at all to like other people's on here. Everyone on CC is like national ranked, won this competition, president of like 5 things... I feel like mine are somewhat basic.. but thanks

Your ECs show you are smart, hardworking, dedicated and have a passion for athletics and
volunteering. What school wouldn't want a student like that?

haha, aw. don't mind iskander. he's probably seen too many trolls in his day.

but don't worry about your ECs. u really DO do a lot & you've stuck to the same things u started doing when u first started high school...awesome. gl :)

Alright I'm sorry if I came off as a little aggresive. Smarteenangel could be right, I've seen too many trolls.

You have solid ECs, well balanced too. All you need to add to the mix are those stellar grades and quadruple digit SATs and you should have a clear shot at those Ivies.
