Do you need to have good academics for art majors?

I'm confused about the requirements for art majors. If I'm planning to major in art, do I still need to do well in core classes (i.e. math, science, english)? or... do I just need to excel in art? How would colleges choose me over another applicant?

Also, do I need to do well in SATs and other tests? Is there any sort of competition at all for art majors? Would I still need to take core classes at colleges I attend or will they all be geared towards art? Thanks.

I asked kind of the same question in this thread:

and I think it depends on which school you want to go to; ie if you want to go to an institute for the arts for college or a normal four-year university.
