I know that McGill instruction is in English but do you need to speak french to survive montreal?

I was just there. I don't speak a word of french and I had no problems with the natives. To be honest I was a bit surprised. Everywhere I went people were very friendly and immediately switched over to english as soon as I opend my mouth. I loved Montreal!

No I think they are bilingual.

No, but it's more fun if you do. English-only Montreal is an insular upscale minority; you'll miss out on much of the life of the city. French-only Montreal is a beleaguered and embittered minority. The working majority in Montreal is comfortably bilingual, and that's where you want to be. But don't be discourages if you're not a fluent French speaker when you get there. A few years of diligent effort will do it.

They speak english, but some of them will treat you like a 2nd class citizen if you don't speak french.

thank you all
