I really want to be able to get into a school for industrial engineering, however it has just hit me that I haven’t really taken the most rigorous load of math/science classes possible.
I’ve been told that I have a really really slim chance at getting into any engineering school because I don’t have many AP math/sciences. To be honest, I don’t see where anymore would have fit into my schedule anyway. The only place I see is junior year I could have taken AP Chem in addition to honors physics, which I didn’t want to do because I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it.
You guys can be honest, I just need to get more opinions. Should I consider choosing something less selective like business? I’m stuck between industrial engineering and business administration, they both interest me.
Background:
4.1 WGPA, 3.7 UGPA
AP’s taken: Human Geography, European History, US History
Honors: Geometry, Algebra 2, Chemistry, Physics
Regular (no honors offered): Biology, French 1-3
Regular (chose non-honors): English 9-11, Pre-Calculus
I’m planning to take:
English 12 (regular)
AP Econ/AP Gov
AP French
AP Calc AB
AP Physics C: Mechanics (over one year, that’s the only physics my school offers)
If you find calculus ab and Physics C difficult, engineering may not be in the cards. Until then, we can’t predict anything.
In addition, engineering programs vary in difficulty : Georgia Tech’s not in the cards, but Wichita State or MUST Rolla would both be very likely.
Why did you choose the regular version of pre-calculus rather than the honors version? (that’s going to hurt you).
Can you take English 12H?
What’s your 6th class?
Are you involved in programming, robotics,…?
What are your test scores?
Chose regular precalc because I heard honors was brutal and the passrate was indeed low. I would have ended up with at most a C.
We have AP Lit, but will that honestly help?
I haven’t considered a sixth class yet.
Neither involved in those.
My highest SAT (new out of 1600) is 1300.
What’s your math score?
The engineering programs will likely take issue with your avoidance of the most rigorous pre-calculus class: if you think such a class is hard, not sure you have the stomach for engineering. OR it may just be that you were immature and are now ready for the challenge.
C’Mon @MYOS1634 Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If the GC ranks the OP’s schedule as most rigorous, AO’s are not going toddle into the minutiae of reg pre-calc vs. honors. If the schedule is only rated as very rigorous, then questions will be raised.
This part I agree with 100%.
I think to be an engineering student you should take Calculus in HS and at least one AP Science. You are doing that.
Like others say, see how those classes go. If you do well, then engineering is in the cards…as long as you get a good Math score on the SAT.
You probably won’t get into the tippy top engineering school, but any ABET accredited engineering school is good.
