Do you see any safety schools on DD's list? Please help a stressed parent

My personal view is that it is not wise to make college choices based on premed goals. One, many high schoolers want to be doctors but end up changing their minds. Two, you can major in anything and go to med school (with prereq’s covered at college or a post bacc program.) Few schools have an actual “premed” program of course.

Davidson is a phenomenal school and I hope that issues of grade deflation don’t keep it out of the spot on her list that it deserves. Just my opinion

She’s in play, @84stag but Duke is inherently a reach because of their admit rate. Maybe Davidson too. The others probably matches/safeties but that only works if she’s happy with them as options.

Except for Duke, she should get into all other schools. I would be surprised if she doesn’t get into all other schools but Duke. Even Duke, I would say she has good chance if her essays are good.

Duke is a reach for everybody. Davidson may be a reach, and UNC is a reach due to this students OOS status. The rest of the schools on this students list appear to be safeties and/or matches.

As I said earlier… some of these schools are so different from one another that once accepted, the student will have to determine fit.

Why no schools in Ohio if that is her state of residence? Kenyon is another liberal arts school if she likes Davidson and Elon. Ohio State also comes to mind as a big state school safety…

Ohio U’s Tutorial College is good to look into, too. Miami Ohio is probably the closest thing to Duke there is in Ohio. Or will you be moving to NC?

I’m confused why Davidson would be a reach (post #23). From what I’ve seen her scores above the 25% line. That sort of defines match to me.

I don’t know if it’s a reach or not… which is why I wrote “may.” It has a 20% acceptance rate.

@turtle17 It’s a reach because Davidson accepts only 20% of their applicants. Having scores above the 25% line is no guarantee of admission for a school that’s that selective. (I know a match doesn’t mean guaranteed, but I don’t even think it’s 50-50.) If she were over the 25% line in a school that accepted 60-70 percent of applicants, different story.

Thank you all for your input! DD has started her application for UNC-W Honors program. I have asked her to take virtual tours at the other schools recommended since we will not be able to take her for a visit before the application deadline - hopefully that’ll help narrow things down.

@rickle1, she is scheduled for a Skype interview with Wake this Wednesday, keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll go well!

@twogirls, she is very interested in research opportunities and service projects.

@Houston1021 @MYOS1634, we are moving to Raleigh soon after she graduates. My husband moved in August due to his company relocating.

Keep us posted and best of luck.

Good Luck! My in laws live in Durham. It is a beautiful area. Davidson takes a large portion of its class ED. https://www.davidson.edu/admission-and-financial-aid/class-of-2021-profile

Looking back through the thread, you may want to consider other solid matches like Richmond and William & Mary (also challenging OOS but I think her stats make her very competitive). These would give you a school a little smaller and a little larger than Wake Forest but very similar in that they are focused on the undergraduate experience (virtually no TAs teaching classes, residential focus - almost everyone lives on campus which creates a natural inclusive dynamic, intimate professor / student relationship). That said, they have different feels. All beautiful! All similarly priced and very little realistic merit aid. Just a thought.

If your daughter loved Davidson and Wake, have her also apply to Furman, Wofford and W & L. They are all within 4 hours. They have a similar atmosphere, excellent academics, great results for med school acceptances, and she is likely to get in all of them. She ought to get into Wake but UNC is a toss up. Their 18% OOS limit makes it hard and without a hook, it is at best a 50/50 shot. If there is any way to argue the residency, try. If she were in state, she would be a definite. Duke is a reach.

I know this has probably already been mentioned, but UNCW is practically a guarantee from an admit standpoint. Rest easy!

As a former recipient of a “Scholar Athlete” award (in the preceding millenium) I am rooting for your DD’s success. I think she has excellent chances at all of the colleges on her list. She’s doing what she can do. I’d be content if my own kids had gone to most of those colleges, but I’d be rooting for either UNC-CH, Duke, or the liberal arts colleges above all.

I would think that the only reason she might not get into Elon is yield protection. Her stats are far above those of any of the kids I’ve known who went there. If she wants to keep it as an option, showing interest would be a good idea. I see she is doing that at Wake, which is smart. If Elon has a travelling rep she can meet, that might be an idea.

But she definitely has a well-rounded list.

Thanks for all your kind words

So, DD had her Skype interview with Wake Forest yesterday. She was well prepared. The interview lasted 17 minutes and she felt it went well.

Now, my concern is that she was interviewed by a senior student and not an admissions officer. Is that the norm? Or am I over analyzing?

Some colleges do have trained senior students doing interviews. It doesn’t mean a thing.
