I need a safety...

My dream school is Duke. I will list my stats below but other than Duke (where I will apply early), I loved Yale, Penn, Dartmouth and Georgetown. I am hoping to find a safety school where I can be happy. Sorry the post is so long:

Please let me know what you think my chances are and what I can do to improve them...

UNC-Chappel Hill comes to mind, just because you mentioned Duke.
Chicago, maybe.

Thanks for responding. Do you think UNC is a safety even though I'm out of state? Also, is Chicago really a safety?

UNC is probably a safety, yes. Chicago is probably a match. Rice is another match.
USC, Emory, Vanderbilt, Tufts etc. are all safeties.

There are a lot of options in LAC's, if you are interested in those?

IN any case, if you apply early, I think you have an excellent chance at Duke.

UNC restricts the total number of slots for OOS to something less than 20%. I understand that getting into UNC from OOS is almost as competitive as getting into Duke itself.

I'm not so sure. I know someone who got into UNC from California but didn't get into berkeley or ucla.

Which LACs do you think would be reach/match/safety?

unc out of state a safety, hahahahaha, thats funny cause you must be joking. Don't listen to this guy UNC is not a safety by a long shot.

yeah UNC is NOT a safety for OOSers!!! might help to know what you want to major in?

Im not sure what I want to major in yet. I've heard that from out of state, UNC is almost as hard to get into is Duke. Is this true?

I will be in 8th grade in August. It has been my dream since I was 8 to be an AF Pilot and hopefully attend AFA in 2010. I would like your advise as in what classes to take in High School? I am also wondering if I should attend the prep school first?

UNC has 18% out of state x 4,000 class size = 720

Now consider how many of those 720 OOS slots are going to athletes (especially after last night's NBA draft!)

UNC is definitely not a safety for OOS . . . nor are several other prominent state schools.

By comparison: Duke has 85% out of state x 1,525 class size = 1,300.

You may want to look at Davidson. While it's not a safety (27% admit rate), you have strong stats for their profile.

Good luck going ED to Duke.

futureAFA, go over to the Military Academies link on this site, then scroll over to the AFA link and ask your question. DocFrance will most likely answer. Keep your grades up, get involved in athletics, clubs and try to become a leader in something. AFA likes Eagle Scouts, Boys State, Civil Air Patrol to name a few good outside organization. The spring of your junior year apply to the academy summer programs. For classes, try to get into as many AP classes that your High School offers. The prep school is offered only if the AFA wants you, but your stats (math/english need a boost) come up a little short. You can't apply specifically to the prep school.

You have a good chance at Duke ED but I would recommend Emory and comparable schools as safeties...definetely not UNC
Good Luck!

Maybe UNC Ashville. Wake Forest?

Am I missing something? 1 AP junior year at a highly competitive school and a 1420 (they probably won't look at writing this year) does not seem like it woukld make Duke or UNC strong shots I agree that Wake and Davidson are more likely.

Other safety Ideas; American, George Washington, U Richmond?

Davidson is not a safety. Neither is Rice.

Zagat, Juniors are only allowed to take one AP junior year and I'm taking the SAT again in october

I'm taking 5 APs next year and admission into AP classes at my school is highly selective. To be able to take an AP class, people must pass an entrance exam and get letters of recommendation for each class. Also, the AP test average at my school is a 4.5
