Do you think I ended up the way I did thanks to my Ethnic Background?

Wait, he’s Canadian? That explains it all… j/k

Looking back at posts, that one guy who said their son didn’t do any internships and that may be why he’s in a hole is exactly on the money as well. At least imo.

And Moire, do realize that you aren’t the only person in this position. I’ve had a year off and am going to do my Masters starting in August, but during the year off I got paid crap money as well, less than you, no benefits etc, and a better major than you, engineering. I didn’t have any internships during school because of my crap GPA and was less marketable, plus I wanted to go to grad school(bad planning made me take a year off instead of going str8 from undergrad to grad). But I applied to places and didn’t get much results, probably because I was too picky as well. I’m kinda envious of you since if I had your position, I coulda made 33k the year off and then went off to school.

So stop complaining and do something already, you aren’t going to get anywhere from posting on CC.

Moire -
What sort of jobs are you applying for? Are they jobs that require a bachelor’s degree in math?
For the most part jobs where a bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics, engineering or math is required. Very few jobs ask exclusively for a bachelor’s degree in math.
It is certainly possible that your ethnicity contributes to your inability to get the higher paying jobs. I doubt that it is the whole reason. You may not be looking in the right places, taking the right routes, and not interviewing well. Throw in your ethnicity, and it can be a problem.
Exactly. Throw in my ethnicity, and I am just another hideous case of affirmative action injustice.

I’ve thought about going the acturial route, but I don’t believe I have the right personality type/interpersonal skills for that type of job.

There are prejudiced folks out there. It can be a disadvantage to be of certain ethnicities for certain jobs. However, it is not the whole picture. If you cast a wide net, you are likely to find opportunities. I don’t think your ethnic background is going to consign you to a certain income level. It can make it harder for you to get jobs, but is not going to shut you out.

Moire has a wonderful fighting-back skill. Doesn’t matter what people said, he would sharply dispute. I wonder how aren’t you able to socialize well?

ok, you have english as a second language. you are major in Math. You are probably not African American since English is their first language. Perhaps you are asian lol, math, so typical

anyway, since you’ve been here for a longgggggg time. Neither should your language difficulty nor your ethnic background be an issue. If you are in political science major, I might say it matters. Wait… how about Obama?
Jeez, I am confused myself. back to the point. isn’t it true that alot of indians, asians have science jobs. And not all of them were born here, so they technically face your problems. My math teacher is asian, he speaks with a very strong accent, but he’s hella cool. As someone in this thread mentioned, there are minority groups making different out there.

As you are bringing up issues, fighting back and becoming famous in CC. you are using your communication skill effectively.

I don’t see how affirmative action would hurt you in a job search unless you’re Asian or white.

It doesn’t hurt him; he’s a ■■■■■, and this whole thread is pretty much pointless. I just feel bad about people coming into this thread with constant good advice that will not go to any use.

He just wants a pity party, and probably wouldn’t hurt if someone gave him some.

^ Woo, pity party! Who brought the beer?

Oh to answer his question again. Yes, you racial profile has everything to do with your failure, just like every minority has failed, you will fail too. a–munch.

So, you’re Black, right?

Moire is a liopleurodon. Lets not diss all the races out there associating him with them.
So, you’re Black, right?
I am not black.

Has no one else thought that the $16/hour job is a good starting salary anyway? I’d take it if it was an otherwise good job.

first off, you probably misused the word ‘settled.’
you most likely ‘ended up’ the way you did with the help of AA. but really, your current status is what you make of it.

Wow, college grads are really ungrateful nowadays. I remember my dad telling me about a fresh-out-of-college engineer looking for manager positions. $16/hr is pretty good. Even if it wasn’t good, you have to start somewhere.

amen, apumic.
