Okay, thank you, norcalguy. :)

Does anybody have any tips on how to find a doctor to shadow? I contacted my coordinator from the summer internship at the hospital, but because it is so close to UTSW and UNT health and science center, they are already at max capacity for medical students and have no opportunities for shadowing.

What is the first step in finding a family practice doctor to shadow?

Is there anything I can do/say to show them that I won’t go around blabbing about experiences from that day, or any day for that matter, breaking HIPPA regulations?

^D. contacted every MD that she ever visited and all her friends parents MD’s. The more you contact, the better chances. She also contacted few at her previous employment at Med. Research facilty that also had doctor’s offices. Go to web site of any Med. School in your area, they have a list of MD’s who are willing to have shdowing kids. They get some points for it also, for whatever (education?). D. got few to shadow. Do not worry about HIPPA, nobody will let you in if it breaks HIPPA rules or you will be required to sign certain papers to dissallow you to talk about certain stuff. Nobody will ask you about how MD cured such and such. They will ask you about what you personally gain from experience, aside from performing surgery or any procedures, it is not the point. The point is to see if medicine is your field or maybe it is not for you, maybe you need to look into something else.

Check UNT’s pre-health/pre-med office. Most schools have a program with doctors in the area that allows undergrads to shadow doctors.

THANK YOU! I tried UNT’s pre-health/pre-med office, it’s virtually useless. I really regret going there sometimes. I can try again, though. :p

Second miami’s point – gotta keep asking.

For all the wrong reasons, our family has lotsa docs. The first three we asked said ‘Sorry, but no’, citing HIPPAA as their excuse. But the the next three said, ‘Sure, we take shadows all the time, and have even allowed high schoolers to shadow.’ One even offered to call a couple of his “buddies”…

Wow, that’s awesome!

Hey guys, on a second note, in the last two weeks, I have accomplished some stuff and would love your construct criticism.

I started a nonprofit last Wednesday which creates care packages for Israeli Soldiers. Israeli Soldiers are drafted as soon as they turn 18, regardless of their political disposition. I have raised $250 dollars so far and made 35 packages. I will be delivering them in person to the soldiers in two weeks!

I also signed up to volunteer at the muscular dystrophy telethon in September, and a camp for children/teens with muscular dystrophy.

I will continue my organization and visit Israel periodically to deliver the packages, and mail them when I cannot visit.

I’m doing another volunteer day in September with the Keep-A-Breast “I Love Boobies” campaign. Last time, I worked the booth explaining about the toxic things in our environments that have been linked to cancer as well as how to screen and further prevent cancer throughout the body. I will be doing the same thing in September.
Next summer, I am doing another 100 hours in the emergency room, as well as an 8 week program in Israel working with the ambulance services. They will train me, teach me medical terminology, and give me first hand experience with CPR, trauma victims, and so on.

I’m going to try to study abroad in the Spring in either London, Greece, Italy, or Australia.

What do you think? Will these things give my application some cushion?

Sincerely,
Shari

I think you chances are pretty good since your GPA is pretty nice and you are a URM. If your MCAT is 30+, I would say you are golden. If you maintain a 3.8 and get a 30-32 on your MCAT, you chances of getting into at least 1 med school is around 93.1 according to AMCAS (https://www.aamc.org/download/157948/data/table25-h-mcatgpa-grid-hisp-0810.pdf.pdf)

Why are you retaking classes? If you are retaking for your own personal reasons, that is ok, but if its for admissions, there is no point. MD schools do not allow for grade replacements.

My advisor told me to retake Texas History (I got a D).

Thank you for your help :)

What kind of letters of recommendation do I need? Can they be from my major professors? Anthropology and Psychology? Also, out of the two, which should I look into researching? They both interest me about the same amount, but I’m not sure if medical schools would prefer one over the other.

Thanks!

2 science profs, 1 non-science, 1 doctor, a research letter if you did research, and maybe another from another source for good measure.

Great, thanks!
