Doctor of Business Administration Growing Popularity and Acceptance Rates

Hi everyone,

I’m new on here, and I have some questions about DBA programs. First of all, is the popularity of this degree growing in the United States? Will more schools offer this program over time? I’ve noticed that some schools in metropolitan areas have adopted this type of program for working professionals, but will more flagship universities (i.e. Mizzou, UT Austin, and KU) adopt this program for working professionals even though they’re in average size cities with fewer corporations than large cities, or will this program remain strictly limited to metropolitan located schools (i.e. UMSL and University of Dallas)? Also, is a business owner able to apply to DBA programs, or do you have to be an executive at a large corporation? Does anyone know the average acceptance rates of DBA programs? Thanks all for your responses!

The DBA used to be very common at top universities. It was the only doctoral degree awarded by Harvard Business School for example. Business schools offered the DBA, which was a research degree, instead of the Ph.D. because the Ph.D. was under the control of the university Graduate School, not the business school. As university wide graduate schools disappeared or relaxed their rules, business schools adopted the Ph.D.

The revived DBA seems to be a non-research degree, rather a professional degree.
