DoDMERB Medical Survey

I got my packet today for the class of 2014.

The survey asked me if I have used, or are currently using, alcohol.

Yes, I have tried alcohol before. No I am not using it now.

I don’t like to drink, I just tried it that one time to see if I liked it.
I want to be completely honest. I don’t know if they mean if I’m an alcoholic or something.
Obviously, 99% of all applicants have tried alcohol at some point in their lifetime.

Is that what DODMERB means when they ask about alcohol?
What about tobacco? Yes I have tried a cigarette. No I don’t smoke…I hate it.

Be completely honest. Tell the whole story. You’ll be fine.

i would tend to say no, you haven’t used it. trying it once doesn’t equal using in my opinion. also, they want to know for health reasons. if you’ve only done it once, then its no worse than going to a bowling alley. this isn’t a test of integrity, they want to know what medical conditions will affect you. if you’re really concerned, put in the comments you’ve smoked one cigarette in your life.

and i just remembered this. when i was asked that for a graduation physical, i had them clarify about tobacco. i’ve smoked a handful of cigars at the academy to celebrate various occassions (completing Recognition, Commitment, Ring Dance, etc). the doctor i was with put said that didn’t really count since it wasn’t a lot at one time and wasn’t a habit.

Catholics “use” every Sunday! …just answer honestly. Good luck 2014-ers!

we could get into a deep disucssion on that though too, but we’ll leave that for another place and time ;)

Haha I bet you could.

Thanks everyone for the help. I also agree that it would just be for health reasons. Obviously, who hasn’t had a drink of something when they’re like 8 years old…“Hey dad, can I have some?”

Good times…

Hate to take this off topic, but I have a question regarding cigars. I was chatting with one of the people I know from Summer Seminar who got an appointment also (she will remain nameless for obvious reasons) but she turns 18 during BCT. So we decided that sometime after acceptance we would celebrate her birthday a little late with cigars. So… what is the policy on stuff like that? I remember asking AF16 at orientation but the only thing I remember is not on the terrazzo and not in uniform.

I answered no.

None of those questions applied to me except the one about contacts.

I would think celebratory or young experienced things wouldn’t count.

They don’t want to go through any more paperwork than they have to.

Along with no tobacco in uniform technically you can’t use it in the dorms or Faifchild, or inside any Air Force facilities. Outside, you can only use them near where they’ve placed receptacles for them. You also can’t smoke during duty hours, from release of Night Call to quarters to Last Military Duty. For the most part, cadets follow these rules, mostly because it makes the most sense to smoke outside next to an ashtray. Dipping and chewing is a bit different, and cadets do break the “none in uniform, none in the dorms” rule, probably because it’s harder to catch (like chewing gum or something).
There are exceptions to this rule- right after a spirit dinner when it’s been said cadets CAN smoke cigars. That and maybe during a football game when no one’s paying attention. Mostly, use common sense.

Just a follow up… as fourth class cadets, we are not allowed out of uniform, so is there a loophole where PT gear is acceptable for that? Also, for the few cigars I’ve had, I enjoy walking with them, so is it limited to the certain areas or could I say find a trail and go for a stroll?

Technically, it’s not good for you anyways…haha.

The answer is still technically no. PC gear is a uniform. Yes, you could take a stroll with a cigar, I guess. I’m not the residential expert, though.
I’m not condoning this, but you could go for a walk in the middle of the woods and smoke a cigar and chances are no one would catch you, in a uniform. If you’re still caught up on this, don’t use tobacco while you’re here as an unrecognized 4 dig.

Only you can prevent forest fires.

Well, yeah, don’t go out there and start a forest fire. That’s part of a national park.

hahaha

yep, i also smoke a cigar for big occasions. never had anyone tell me i couldnt smoke in PC gear, but it IS technically a uniform so… who knows

You could do it because no one really cares. There are much more serious rules you could break here. That may sound bad, but it’s the truth.

No one is going to bother you about tobacco really. I’ve smoked plenty of cigars and hookah at the academy down on the ground level and the TZO. I wouldn’t worry about it.

i think that a lot of people have this kind of question, but here goes anyways.

i have drank (ive been in college for 2 years for christ sake) fairly regularly, and i was underage when i did. will that sort of thing disqualify me? i realize that it is illegal, and that may be an issue when someone is applying to any military. just wondering.
