Doe Salutatorian/Valedictorian Have a big advantage?

How much of an advantage does being the Salutatorian or Valedictorian of a hihg school class of more than say 300 students have when applying to UPenn, especially Wharton?

I don't think I know how to spell

depends on how big the gap is, i'd say

if you came from my high school in my graduating class of 550, in which the difference between the top 7 graduates was a weighted gpa delta of 0.005... (and we all had unweighted 4.0s), no big difference

Those titles mean absolutely nothing to Penn, many schools give the Vallie title to all 4.0's, some schools give the top 10% the title, it all depends on the school, thats why penn asks for your class rank, as do other top schools.

He probably meant the rank 1 and rank 2 students in a class. Everyone knows that no one is picked valedictorian until close to graduation anyway.

yea that is what i meant number 1 or number 2

Alright I got some stats from the Penn website to help you out ca9. 45.1% of all valedictorians who applied were admitted. 34% of salutatorians who applied were admitted. top five % other than top two that applied 17.7%. So I guess to answer your question, yes.

No, that's the makeup of Penn's current freshman class not % of applicants of each.

it says percent admitted, that means percent of people that were admitted of the ones that applied who were in the certain group

it cannot be the make-up of the class because it does not equal 100%

I haven't seen the website but even if it doesn't equal 100% it doesnt mean that it could not be the make-up of the class. you are forgetting about the people outside of the top 5% that were admitted. (must have been a small number)

There is no way that 45% of penn's (or anyone's) incoming class consists of valedictorians. Also, that section of the incoming class profile on the website is referring to the percent admitted (out of the total pool of applications) of different categories of rank (valedictorian, salutatorian, etc.), so it is indeed stating that 45% of valedictorians who applied were admitted.

out of all the valedictorians who applied, 45% were admitted. so if you are a valedictorian and you apply, you have a 45% chance of admission.

if you are a salutatorian, you have a 34% chance of admission.

it has nothing to do with % makeup of class.

Thanx for backin me up. As for the rest of the stats for outside of top 5%:

top5%-top 10% : 8.3%
top 10%-top 20% : 3.0%
